Did most of it before Christmas and now I just have to tackle the small piles in the basement. Time to donate books and old linens and I should be good to go.

@Yardlie hahaha! True enough! I'm in the northeast States. It just takes me longer and longer to get the big cleaning done - i'm anxious to get a head-start so i can throw open the windows and enjoy the spring air as soon as it arrives! And actually, we've had an unseasonably warm, mild winter here. 'Can't complain.. 'Looking forward to springtime anyway!
'Hope your spring arrives sooner than later this year
Cheers!

Being retired, I just do what I see as necessary when I see it. My largest want when I use to work, was to be able to do just that.

I love to clean. I'll get up in the morning, turn on the iPod and go to town. I do a good spring cleaning and than again do another good cleaning in the fall, right before Christmas. In between, I probably vacuum 2-3 times a week.
I just said to DH the other day that, starting in March, I'd like to take every weekend and attack a room at a time. Remove everything from the room that we can, Bona the floors, wash down the walls, etc. As we bring things back into the room, give them a good cleaning, too. Take the drapes to the drycleaner. Clean out closets, clean out drawers. I would attack the kitchen by myself, wash down the cabinets and clean with lemon oil, clean out cabinets and the pantry shelves. DH will steam-clean the bathroom and kitchen floors, and clean the carpet and the upholstered furniture. I used to do most of this by myself, but I could really use the help now. And he agreed.
We probably could hiring a cleaning person, but I'm paranoid. I would never let anybody in the house when I'm not home. We have five cats and I'd be scared to death, she would accidentally let them outside.

My strategy has usually been to put it off as long as possible.

When I was growing up, the first couple of weeks of our summer vacation was spent "spring cleaning" the house. My mom wanted it done so we had the rest of the summer to do what we wanted. I still spring clean like I did growing up but because I no longer get summer vacation like that, I tackle things on the weekend.
This year is a little different because we are doing some work around the house. We already did kitchen counters and as we removed the old counters, I cleaned out all the cupboards and drawers. We are painting next including the ceiling and walls, getting a new window above the sink, new lighting and then we're on to the backsplash. Once that is done, we are doing a wood floor in the kitchen, living room and entryway. So I will be spring cleaning those rooms as the work gets done in them.
When I spring clean, everything gets taken off tables and walls and is washed as much as possible. Window coverings are taken down and washed or wiped down (in the case of blinds), windows are cleaned, all window sills and woodwork is cleaned with Murphy's Oil Soap and all walls are washed down with a cleaner and wet rag. All light fixtures are taken apart and washed. All furniture and appliances are moved so behind them can be cleaned.
I generally like to do this when the weather gets warmer so windows can be opened. Plus I don't see the point in spring cleaning when we are still in the rainy/muddy part of spring and things end up tracked in the house.
