Many years ago, think the late 1950's.....the show Candid Camera did a prank similar.  They put up a barrier and told the drivers that the State of Delaware was closed.  Reason?  Too many people.  They told the drivers to come back tomorrow.  Everyone believed them.   In those days, you accepted authority without question.
