Stilltamn8 and Momof4...Dan Fogelberg is most definitely a poet and my favorite of all time. He came to St Louis (when I still lived there) 3x in one year, and I went all 3x. I was fortunate to see him during his last tour, before he got ill, in his home town of Peoria, IL and also had backstage passes. I miss him greatly.

Thank you all for sharing.

There are so many songs that I know will always remind me of this time in my life.

When my dad was lying in bed at hospice and could no longer speak, I thanked him for how much he has taught me, and I told him how very much I love him. I also told him I'd be okay, and not to worry about me.

A few hours before he died, I told him that I want him to be happy, healthy and free...and that he cannot do that in this body...

Several hours later, as I was leaving the hospice after his death, I turned on the radio.

The song playing was "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. I started to sob, and it was good that there was road construction, and I had to stop. I cried, and I clapped along with the song.

I think that if I ever stand any chance of being happy, it will only be because of what my dad caused me to learn.

I sobbed because I lost him...but--at that moment in time--they were happy tears as well, because he wasn't suffering anymore.

Many times while he was ill, I'd heard the song and it had lifted my mood. To hear it as soon as I turned the radio on, leaving hospice in the pouring rain after my dad had just died...it felt surreal.

"Happy"

[Verse 1:]
It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break
I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space
With the air, like I don’t care baby by the way

[Chorus:]
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

[Verse 2:]
Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah,
Well, give me all you got, and don’t hold it back, yeah,
Well, I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine, yeah,
No offense to you, don’t waste your time
Here’s why

[Chorus]

Hey, come on

[Bridge:]
(happy)
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
I said (let me tell you now)
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
My level's too high
Bring me down
Can't nothing bring me down
I said

[Chorus 2x]

Hey, come on

(happy)
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down… my level's too high…
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down, I said (let me tell you now)

[Chorus 2x]

Come on

Mistri.....It is so good that you were able to say those things to your Dad. I totally remember sobbing when I heard certain songs, music touches us deep in our souls like nothing else can. It still hits me to this day with certain songs. Six years ago I sat beside my Dad as he lay in bed at the hospice for the last few hours of his life and I will be forever grateful that I could be with him......it honestly still seems like yesterday. It was so hard to see him struggling with pain, but the hospice people were kind and did their best to make him as comfortable as possible. My Dad struggled with believing in a God, yet he was such a good and kind man. I love and miss him so much, and I'm so grateful to feel him watching over me.

Reading the last couple of posts reminded me of the song "Elusive Butterfly" by Bob Lind back in the mid 60s. My older brother had just died in a car accident when this came out and I felt he was letting me know...

You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps
Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name
As I ran searching after something to believe in
You might have seen me runnin'
Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind
If you remember something there
That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

[Instrumental Interlude]

Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love
