@Mindy D    I'm breaking my vow not to post here to help you.  You're over-thinking this return thing.  Go to the USPS website and in the bottom right corner of the home page, there is a block to click on to schedule a pick up at your convenience.  As soon as they pick it up, they send you an email receipt.  I snap a photo of the package with my cell.  Quick and easy. 

And yes, I prefer the Proforum.  Bye.

I used to do the same...BUT using USPS.com and scheduling your OWN pickup gives you a confirmation number.

Then you receive an email confirming again.

When the postal worker picks it up, you get another email receipt confirming they took it.

You are 100% covered.  No need to wait in line for the PO at all.  No multiple sites, no CS, no phone calls, NO HOOPS!

No log in to remember, no account to set up, no passwords, the EASIEST way ever.

I was not aware of that process, thanks for the info  but I am just going to continue my routine of rebagging the item, put the return label on it and give it to the mail carrier when they deliver the new mail. Since I am in an apartment building the carrier stops daily so that works for me.

I usually return items by priority mail so I can easily track it and it arrives faster than pony express labels. I print and pay for postage online and give it to my mail carrier. Envelopes and boxes are free from a USPS office or online.
