Re: So tired of gloom and doom

I'm trying to stay postive and not panic but my daughter is getting married in 7 weeks and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well with that.  My son has a trip planned to Greece in a couple of weeks too.  If it wasn't for that I wouldn't be concerned at all, I'm retired and would just avoid crowds and keep washing my hands.

CDC.gov Updated March 5, 2020

CDC is no longer reporting the number of persons under investigation (PUIs) that have been tested, as well as PUIs that have tested negative. Now that states are testing and reporting their own results, CDC’s numbers are not representative of all testing being done nationwide.

As of March 4, 2020  1,526  patients had been tested at CDC. This does not include testing being done at state and local public health laboratories, which began this week.

This map includes states that have successfully verified and are currently using COVID-19 diagnostic tests. This list of states currently testing for COVID-19 is provided by the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL).

@Hayfield  Goood luck with the wedding!  I hope all goes well!

DH and I are also retired and can stay in most of the time...however I had planned on going to Florida (fly from Philly) later this month to visit my 93 year old mom.  DD and her boyfriend would come too.  I told mom last week that there is a good chance we won't be coming.  There is no way I can physically drive that distance.

DS is going to California for a wedding in May and I've planned to go on a trip to Spain with some extended family in June.  Who knows at this point if that will happen?!

Everyday I've been reading the CDC site & NYTimes...and while it is making me more anxious I am so sick of the gloom & doom too!

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

LIfe has it's gloom and doom.

My approach, when it is kind of removed from my own personal life, like this is right now (as opposed to say, my spouse undergoing cancer treatment, kind of closer gloom would be), is to find things that bring me joy and focus on them in between the gloomy bits and pieces.

I'm keeping informed with the latest on the virus and all it entails, but I'm still doing things I like and enjoy. I'm still following the television programs I am into. I'm still enjoying the things I do in homemaking every day. I'm still enjoying keeping in touch with friends and family, some in person, some by text or phone. I'm still making plans on how to set up the garden and do the outside clean up come spring.

So I guess my only advice is find the little things you enjoy and keep them in the front of as many hours of the day as you can.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

There is some importance to following the advice of a medical professional to self-quarantine, essentially avoiding contact with others.

A New Hampshire man who returned from Italy and was asked to quarantine, broke the quarantine and attended an event at Dartmouth, thus expanding the chain of potential contacts.

The New Hampshire Health Commissioner has now issued a formal order for him to stay home and he has tested positive. Every state's law varies, but if he breaks quarantine again it would be a misdemeanor.

“You can’t bring criminal charges for being a bonehead or just not doing what you were told was advisable to do,” said Wendy Parmet, faculty director of the Center for Health Policy and Law at Northeastern University. “It’s not illegal to ignore the advice of your health care provider, or even the health department until officials follow the particular procedures to issue a formal health order, and those procedures vary by state.”

It does make you wonder how much testing is "enough"  One person who was tested twice and was negative came down with the virus - after being released from quarantine.

So should everyone be tested daily/weekly?  Just what would be sufficient?  I mean you can't know if you've been exposed.  So what should be done here?

@Isobel Archer   She didn't come down with the virus after being released-she tested positive with a test while in quarantine but the CDC released her before those results had come back.

The positive was very weak.

Well then that's even more disturbing that they would release her BEFORE the results of the test came back - now isn't it?

What exactly is the point of testing if you don't wait for the results?

@Isobel Archer   Agree.  The CDC failed miserably with this one.  Although the mayor and other lawmakers are demaning answers, none will be forthcoming.

I was at the dr. office with DH and used the restroom. They had a container full of wrapped wipes to use when you leave specimin to clean the area before.

I bet those are good and strong but don't know.

So now I just read that the reason testing may have been slow was that the previous Admin put in place regulations to require this type of testing to be approved by the FDA - so individual applications by state labs and hospitals to that agency were required.  That regulation has been reversed.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

I'm glad we did the cruise ships yrs. ago. GMA this morning said another ship is docked and people won't be getting off. You couldn't pay me to take a cruise.

Course, I wouldn't be flying either. We're all responsible for ourselves don't blame anybody else.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

The latest cases of Corona Virus are very close to my home, in fact the synagogue where the man worshiped is less than a mile from my home. I am practicing good hygiene and hoping this is over soon

The man effected did not ride the same train line as DH, but did ride the same line as my brother, I sure hope their paths did not cross,

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.
