@aggravated wrote:Smokers? Okay. I read every day over and over and television coverage from on to off about opiod addiction completely taking over the country. Opiod addiction? Why in the world would anyone start taking these drugs knowing the consequences? Trillions of dollars, highest cost of anything medically related at this point, needles everywhere. Think about that. Then worry about someone smoking in their own yard.
@aggravated, I don't know about you, but I have the capacity for endless worry. :-)
I think the smoking issue, though, perhaps hits people more personally than the devastating opoid addiction, unless of course they know a person(s) involved.

@JobGirl wrote:And for everyone asking why they throw butts out the window when was the last time you saw a car with an ashtray????
I'm not really sure how you would put it out anyplace else driving
Maybe ask a pothead -they smoke while driving too how do they save theirs??????????
My car is a 2011 and still has an ashtray.
How about if they want to continue with the habit of smoking, they put their own ashtray in the car instead of littering?

I don't care if you smoke or don't. I don't care if you're fat or not. I don't care if you're a drunk or not. I don't care if you're an addict of any type or not.
What I DO care about is when it crosses over into my personal space. Both my parents smoked- hell, ALL my family members smoke except me. My dad was a drunk- hell, MOST of my family members are drunks. My mom popped Valium like it was M & M's-, hell, ALL my aunts popped them. And so it goes; I didn't grow up without some serious
%$(* in my life. But I DO NOT have to tolerate it as an adult and I won't.
If that means not going over to someone's house because it reeks like an ashtray, I won't. Or ride in their car and even eat food they bring in (yes, smokers, it reeks too), I won't. Just like I won't hang out with drunks or people who get high. I don't want them in my house, around my house or next to me in a restaurant/movie where I have to smell their addiction on them. Nope, I don't have to tolerate it in ANY way....not anymore.
THAT'S my opinion on that.
Edited for punctuation.

@Juniper2 wrote:I find smokers to be less uptight and just basically nicer to be around. Many smoke as a way to battle anxiety and stress, much like people smoke pot to "chill" -- except that tobacco smoking is still legal. Smoking used to be very relaxing until the socially acceptable police put a stop to that. Why is smoking pot considered therapeutical but other ways of smoking aren't? When did a legal pastime become bad and an illegal pastime become good?
I think that is an excuse. That being said, I don't really care what others choose to do with their body as long as it doesn't affect me. I don't care if people want to smoke but don't smoke in public where I have to breathe it in and don't throw your butts all over.
If you want to drink, drink. But again, be responsible. Don't drink and drive. Don't get abusive and start a fight because you drank too much.
You want to smoke pot. So be it. Same rules apply as above.

Smoking is a bad, filthy habit, but it is so addictive some people are powerless to quit. I quit in the 80's when I got pregnant and never went back to smoking.

@Lipstickdiva. A doctor once recommended smoking to my non-smoking sister-in-law for her stress instead of giving her ascript. True story. As far as putting up with others' personal and social habits, I'd be willing to bet a smoker is more likely to have the mindset of " live and let live" and to be more tolerant of others.

I smoked 2 times in my 70+ years. When a teen it was cool; got the flu, stopped and never picked up again, no craving, no desire to smoke. I taught myself to knit to keep my fingers busy, very smart, creative decision that has became a life-long pleasure. Then, during a very stressful job in the 90's, someone offered me a cigarette and I took it--after about 2 yrs I realized I was using cigarettes as a crutch and stopped cold, no craving, no desire to smoke, I was not addicted, it was a habit for me. As a former smoker, I cannot abide the smell or being around a smoker.......not too many around any more and I appeciate the clean air....
