My Mom smoked until I was 21, as an adult I developed asthma and COPD without smoking.

I can not be with in 10 feet of a smoker.

Our downstairs neighbor who died of lung cancer was a smoker, he would leave his door open all the time and filled the hall with the smoke.

The co-op now does not allow smoking in the apartments

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

I quit smoking over 30 years ago.  Never had the urge to touch a cigarette again, and i quit cold turkey.  Just made up my mind to do so.  Took a lot of pretzel sticks and lollipops in the beginning, since I was so used to having a cigarette to hold on to.  But that didn't go on for very long.   I rarely see smokers these days.

When I quit (cold turkey) I had gone to a "smoking cessation" program where I worked.  The company brought in a rep from the Cancer Society or Heart Association (can't remember whiich) and a co-worker, who also smoked, asked me if I'd go to the presentation with her.  I said O.K., even though I had no intention of quitting.  After the presentation I decided to see how long I could go without having a cigarette.  That nite I was at an Irish bar with; my boyfriend (it was St. Patrick's Day) and I smoked my last cigarette at 11 P.M,

There was a helpliine I could call that would give me a pep talk every time I wanted a cigarette, and as I was smoking 2 1/2 packs a day I called that number every 5 minutes, hahaha.  I also started eating large amounts of Entenmann's crumb cake as a substitute.  Thankfully, I stopped doing that after gaining 6 or 7 pounds and decided to start walking every morning as soon as I got up (instead of lighting up as soon as my eyes were open, which was my habit)..

After awhile I joined a gym.  I finally had found the good habit that kicked the bad one.  And kept it kicked!

There is something in cigarette smoke that causes my throat to close up.  I can't be near it either.  When I stated earlier that I gagged my way through childhood I wasn't kidding.

(And of course someone posted a snarky comment about it.)

I also grew up in a home where both parents smoked. Like chimneys.  I had bronchitis more than any other kid I knew.

I quit smoking a year ago. I do not feel any better than before. I was not a slob. People say we are disgusting......

I WAS AN ADDICT, I STILL AM AN ADDICT! I want one every single day. This is incredibly difficult, short tempered, over eating, depressed.

We are SORRY we smoke, we know we are disgusting to all 😢😢😢. Just wanting to vent.

@Mustang Shar  Oh yes, the addiction is there for sure.  However, you are not a disgusting person!  There is more to quitting smoking than just dealing with the withdrawal symptoms.  The addiction cycle doesn't stop there-you still deal with the psychological effects when you quit (and even while still smoking).

It doesnt matter how considerate a smoker is. The particulate gets in their clothing, hair etc and they bring it around non smokers who are then exposed to second hand smoke even if the smoker is not smoking. There have been people who come into my office, not smoking, and when they leave my office smells like an ashtray.

I started smoking at sixteen and stopped smoking Nov.1997 at the age of 36.  It was so hard but the feeling of freedom amazed me.  Never wondering again where or when I could have a cig.  However, even after all this time I would knock everyone down to get out of my way to go buy a pack if they come up with a "healthy" way to smoke.  Stink or no stink I still miss the smoking.  The best ones were after I had been water skiing.

It's the attitude of so many smokers that I find abhorrent -- how they feel they should be able to smoke anywhere they choose, how they don't understand, or just don't care, about inflicting harm on bystanders, or their children or pets, how they litter (the beaches are one huge ashtray to them!). They want to kill themselves? Fine. Keep your habit to yourself. It's their complete disregard for anyone else that disgusts me.

I have alienated a couple of family members because they are not permitted in my home (or car) -- not even if they don't light up. They stink. And I certainly won't go to their homes.

Where do you live?  I seldom see anyone smoking anymore.  I never see cigarette buts.  None of my family smokes and none of my friends do either.  The only time I ever get a whiff of smoke is when employees are smoking behind the grocery store.  It is very difficult for people to quit smoking.  You certainly have the right to not have people in your home or car that you feel stink - I am surprised they even want to be.

I just feel pity for them....they are killing themselves puff by puff....they have a death wish. So sad.🚭

Most smokers start young, peer pressure, etc.

Cigarettes contain addictive additives.  Most people don't know that.  They don't have a death wish, they are addicts.

I'm not a smoker and never have been.

I can understand older people smoking and being unable to stop.  I do not understand seeing young people smoking today when they are well aware of the dangers.
