At least 1/2 the population won't be the cause

@Noel7.     I have found that results of many studies depends on who funds them. Also, what kills you isn't necessarily going to kill me.  So for me to want to shut down everyone else's activities because it "might" kill me is unrealistic.  If that were the case, I would not leave my house because everything has the potential to harm us in some way or another.  BTW, my attempt at humor about the farting apparently went over some heads.

Do those who use MJ face the same litany of adverse health consequences? I'm not aware that they do. They may face some, but I don't think it's up there with cigarettes.

I do hope that when legalized, there are the same constraints on use as there are now for cigs.

People throughout this thread are ignoring the fact that smoking a joint is not the only way to use cannabis - not to mention that there are only eight states currently where recreational cannabis use is permitted, otherwise it's strictly medical.

The vast majority of medical users don't smoke joints.  A very large percentage of recreational users don't smoke joints, they vape.  Common vaporizer pens do not contain tobacco OR dried cannabis, they use a cannabis-containing oil distillation. Since combustion does not occur, smoke does not occur. It's the vapor from the cannabis-infused oil that is (barely) visible.

California already has strict laws which will be applied to recreational use as well. All cannabis in whatever form is lab-tested to make sure any possible toxin is kept to the smallest possible amount - FAR less than cigarette smoke or Uncle Joe's backyard weed.

I assume that wherever vaping of e-cigarettes is allowed, in general vaping of cannabis will be allowed, and if a restaurant, movie theater, etc says "no e-cigs" that means no vaping of anything. But I'm sure each state has its own laws. CA's aren't "out there" yet in total.

If you'd bothered reading this line of conversation, you'd know that I'm not interested in shutting down anyone's activities, otherwise known as smoking.

If you think it "might" kill, the information and studies have indeed gone over your head.

There are lots of things in life "proven" to harm or kill, but none scorned as much as smokers are.  The likelihood of both of us dying from someone's second hand smoke is nil.   So much panic over one issue.  Why only pick on cigarette smokers and people who vape for causing health hazards to others, but pot smokers' second hand smoke gets a pass?

???

I have seen zero panic in this thread about anything whatever. I have seen Defenders of Smoking go rabid.

As to the rest of your post - you clearly haven't read the thread - nor would you absorb anything if you did, since you have predetermined every poster in this thread is a Big Rude.

This thread was started about cigarette smokers. If you feel motivated, you could start a thread on cannabis use, drinking, or spitting sunflower seeds into a spittoon.

@Moonchilde. Oh, but I have read the entire thread and the narrative has taken several turns.   Just keeping up with the many twists.  I don't condone cigarette smoking, but I defend the rights of smokers to do so, without being harassed by holier than thou people who believe they are superior to all others in their habits or their opinions.  I hate ISIS, but I don't hate smokers, if I must keep to the theme of the original post.  Also, I do happen to agree with others on this thread, just not you.

I am not a smoker and besides having a cigarette or two in high school (and promptly throwing up) I never have been. I know my mom smoked when she was younger but she quit long before I was born.

I do have friends that smoke though and they don't disgust me. They dont' throw their cigarettes out the window or any of the obnoxious things mentioned here. I do know that there are smokers that do and that makes up a good amount of litter. Litter is my pet peeve. Most of the smokers I know have tried desperately to quit more than a few times. The average amount of times a smoker tries to quit before actually successfully quitting is 7. I know by watching friends who have quit how difficult it is. I actually don't believe I know a smoker who still smokes who doesn't want to quit or hasn't tried or is currently trying.

When we have friends over who smoke I don't allow them to smoke in my house but they are allowed to smoke on my deck.

I don't hate smokers nor do they disgust me. I do wish the US would start a program like they have in Australia called "Bin Your Butt". They hand out little containers that smokers can take with them to put their cigarettes out and cap it and take it with them. They also ask that employers or businesses provide places to put out cigarettes. Years ago they had more public ashtrays around and they don't anymore I guess in hopes people would stop smoking. Well less people smoke but people still do so it isn't realistic to think that people won't put their cigarettes out somewhere. If people had more access to public ones and the little great containers they hand out free in Australia I think that would be a great step.

In my experience with the exception of Asia, I see more littering here than any other country in Europe or Australia. I just watched someone throw a big gulp cup out the window while driving the other day. I have never seen anyone blatantly littering in Europe or Australia like I do here. Seriously I could never just throw trash out the window while driving. Who does that without feeling like a huge loser?

I didn't pick on anyone, don't make things up about other posters just because you don't understand or know the data.

And panic?  Oh, please 🙄
