Are they worth the $$$$?

We have slept on them for years. The one we have now is older so we use foam topper on it so I'd definitely get one with a built in topper. We each have different sleep preferences and that's why we like it so much. I definitely feel that they're worth the purchase price but if you have a Sleep Number store nearby I'd get it from there so you can try one out first.

My opinion is NO. We had one in our Winnebago so we bought one for the house. It was a split King and we hated it. I had to fight like heck to get Sleep Number to allow us to change to a regular king, they told me we were past the return date. . . this was during covid and the store was closed. I had left them 17 messages. . .NO ONE returned my calls. They eventually did make the exchange to a regular king but it took a lot of fighting and I will NEVER do business with them again. Sheets do not fit the mattress properly, they are constantly slipping ff due to the mattress being thinner than the new ultra thick mattresses. I even bought sheets designed specifically for the Sleep Number bed....they still do not fit properly so we have to use 'garters' to keep the sheets neatly attached. I really hate the bed but my husband's GERD does much better with it that I live with it for his benefit.

We had one, or should I say two. One in the main bedroom and the other in our RV.
They were okay, but in imo, not worth the high price. The air chambers dry rotted and the mattress sunk...both of them. They were not usable after that.
They were comfortable, but I would never buy another one. They don't last.

I have had 2 and wished I still had one. Loved them.

In February 2026, we changed to a Sleep Science adjustable I-Flip Napa bed from Costco. It was $400 off on a holiday special and we paid the extra $85 setup fee. Total under $1600 for the queen setup. The dual control king was a higher price, but we did not need it.
It was highly recommended by two different friends with various issues including restless legs and back pain. I was hesitant but Costco has a good return policy.
I noticed a difference after the first fews nights with my back pain. It has a zero G setting, vibration, adjustments for reading in bed and a few other bells and whistles. We made a few microadjustments on the one-button memory position for sleeping, but we are now satisfied.
We've had no experience with Sleep Number, but schlepping around to mattress/furniture stores is not in the cards for us. Both side sleepers if that makes a difference. One friend is a back sleeper and the other a side sleeper. Hope this helps.

no eventually something happens and the mattress doesn't work.

I didn't care for mine at all.
We bought one about 15 years ago. Honestly, I was plagued with back problems from that thing from the moment we got it. It just got worse over time. Needless to say, we went back to a regular mattress.
That being said, so many people have it and love it. Maybe it's better now than it was then. I don't know. It just wasn't for me.

I have one and won't buy another. The thing is, once you find your sleep number you just keep it there. At least, I do. Changing the softness of the mattress isn't something I do very often.
However, I do have an adjustable frame and love it.
Edit: I wanted to add that I liked the bed I just didn't think it was worth the money to adjust the softness. Otherwise, the bed is good.

We have a king Sleep Number bed purchased many years ago. They have different qualities of SN beds. Ours was the best at the time.
The best bed we have ever owned.
