Re: Since when did HSN start adding tax to orders?

I don't see where anyone is confused with state and federal taxes.

I live in Ohio and when I file my state taxes, there is a spot for me to insert on-line purchases that I have made that were not taxed, but had I walked into a store and purchased the items, I would have paid sales tax.

Re: Since when did HSN start adding tax to orders?

I had items in my cart yesterday and started to check out. For the first time, I noticed est. tax added to my purchases.

When I phoned CS, I was told the tax amount would drop back off when processed. Not saying it is accurate , just saying what I was told.

I live in OH and yes we are questioned on our taxes if we made any purchases online that we did not pay OH sales tax on at the time of purchase.

It's as broad as it is long, for us.

Re: Since when did HSN start adding tax to orders?

I live in WV and was never charged for state sales tax in the past by HSN at time of purchase.

However, it was my responsibility to report and pay the internet sales taxes on my state return.

I haven't purchased anything yet in 2015 from HSN, but I would just as soon pay it at the time of purchase and have it over with.

Sales tax is the LAW and has nothing to do with HSN - they are required by law to charge them.

Re: Since when did HSN start adding tax to orders?

I beg your pardon....

States with Internet sales Tax

Currently, purchases of taxable items made on HSN.com, are taxed only if the item is shipped to a location in the following states:

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia

It is a "state by state" law.

That estimated tax amount always showed zero before. On my most recently place order, I was charged the sales tax. Maybe it was a mistake?

DH ordered something from another on-line site and wasn't charged sales tax.

Diva, it showed on my order , also. All the way thru check out, but I didn't go ahead and hit submit . CS assured me it would drop off , if I placed the order.

If after you submitted the order and it still shows tax charged, I would surely call and tell them I want it removed , as they aren't suppose to collect it for OH.

But then she has to keep track of it and submit it to the state herself, along with the rest of her taxable internet purchases not taxed at point of sale.

It is a "state by state" law.

The items are taxable...meaning tax is owed on them. For the listed states, HSN collects and submits the tax. For all other states (except two, I believe), the buyer is supposed to pay the owed tax to the state directly. Usually the state allows this to be done once a year as part of the state income tax reconciliation process though the sales tax on internet purchases (usually called a "use tax") is separate from state or local income taxes.

I am aware of that, but it is whatever her preference is - as HSN is NOT suppose to tax purchases we make in OH. I didn't think I needed to add that she would need to keep track of it and submit it herself , as I am sure she is aware of that. We in OH , know what is on our tax forms.
