To determine loss of power during storm! Simple and brilliant!

Re: Simple Trick before a storm hits

One thing that I saw to do on my facebook page was to put all of your important papers and photos and such inside your dishwasher and lock the door.

Dishwashers are water tight, and supposedly, your stuff will be safe in there.

I honestly don't know if this would actually work or not, but it's been making the rounds on fb as one thing to do.

Another trick I heard of is putting important papers in your dish washer

as it is water tight .. although at 150 mph.  ....who knows ...

@Big Joanie@LTT1@Plaid Pants2  Might work OK (if you still have a dishwasher after the storm).

Re: Simple Trick before a storm hits

We fill a small water bottle half full, put into freezer on its side and let it freeze.  Then stand the bottle up, if the power goes off, the water will be in the bottom of the bottle.  This is good to do when you've been gone on vacation, and wouldn't know if you'd lost power, and food had thawed and refrozen.

@2blondeSad to say, but you are so right!   Lots of the recommended prep works really well -    until it doesn't.  Those who are in flood zones, those who get right-quadrant hits of the top winds may do everything people have discovered helpful,  all to no avail.

@millieshops  Right on.  My friends are taking no chances.  They loaded up the cats and whatever they could get into the SUV and came back to Ohio last night (a long drive, but they really didn't have anywhere else to go).

Especially at 105 mph. winds .. just make sure your insurance is paid up...

Right now we are trying to decide to cut the screen on our screen cage as

it helps the wind go through.. without taking the whole cage with it .. which

I have seen ...but as I said at 100 mph or more ..I don't think anything will

help....

@Plaid Pants2  I would suggest putting those papers in a plastic bag that seals tightly.

You can always double seal the bag with waterproof tape.

Important papers should be scanned and backed up from your computer.  The little drive is so small and easy to put in a go bag.  Most papers can fit easily into a gallon size plastic bag, too, to take with you.

I'm not keen on the dishwasher idea but at least double waterproof them before doing this.
