Sad story from the very beginning. Hopefully this will inform some that visit this site about the danger and mortality rate of PE. I was very, very, very fortunate to have lived through 2 different episodes, but when I mention it to people I don't thing some get how many die from these event. I seen studies that say over 85% of the PE's are not diagnosed until autopsy.

I agree. It was a team of doctors AND the lawyers for the hospital interpreting what they thought were the requirements of the law. The author, or co-author, of the original law, is a nationally known and respected law professor who also specializes in medical ETHICS.

in this case an advance directive wouldn't have mattered.

In this case, it was state law that mandated the mother must be kept alive. I don't believe having her wishes in writing would have made any difference. I can only imagine "ideologues" made the law. Why else would it exist?

May the sweet baby also rest in peace...how sad the attorneys didn't even mention the unborn baby in their statement.

This is a lose-lose situation; no reason to be thankful or happy when two lives are lost. My prayers are with the mother of Marlise; she has lost her daughter and her grandchild today.
