My daughter and son-in-law used to do that to us when they visited. We would always go out to eat and my husband (who was taught to always pay for everything) would pay for our dinners. When my son-in-law started buying beers with his meal I started telling the waitperson, separate checks. You should have seen the look on their faces when I said that. He is still a slug.

@Effie54 Actually that is how we both feel , it appears cheap also it appears as if we aren't very good friends . The 3 of us don't drink only him, so it isn't that. Maybe it's just we don't care what others are ordering we enjoy dinning out with friends and family we split the check with everyone else we dine with even amounts to each couple . We do not go over the bill and itemize what a each person ate, that's crazy !
@Kitty Galore If you have been friends with her since forever is this the first time all four met for dinner???
Since her husband is the only one who drinks perhaps he did not expect others to pay for his alcohol. I'd give him credit.
Overall I see nothing cheap or ill-mannered or whatever.
People can choose to share the bill or not.
It is not a major issue. *shrug*

@Cakers3 actually we have dined with them 3 times. They are recently married , 2nd husband , Former husband we split our bill. They just moved back to our state. Still find it uncomfortable as I've never encountered this before , nor has my husband .
I write this in another post previously that ordering an appetizer is uncomfortable as they haven't so they just sit there watching us and because of that we always ask if they would like some . It's just not mannered to eat in front of others when they have nothing
in front of them too. So that is another issue with separate checks for us .

Exactly! We do the exact same. We split it without itemizing it. We enjoy going out with friends and family. Great minds think alike! 👍🏻

Every server, in every restaurant asks. It's very common and they don't want to risk being surprised at the end. Also it eliminates the haggling over who had prime rib and 4 martinis and who had chicken and iced tea.

@Enufstuff wrote:@Carmie@drizellla My daughter has a friend who would take advantage of her , when they went out to dinner.
They have been best friends since high school and now in their 50's. They always split the bill 50/50. But a few times, it was not reasonable when, the friend always drank more than my daughter and then she would order a dinner to take home to her teenage son.
My daughter would later complain to me, but she should have spoken up to her friend when it happened. The friend never offered to pay more to cover her share. It is too bad that some people will take advantage of others.
Now her friend moved away to another state in
the midwest.
I think that it is a good idea to ask for separate checks upfront.
@Enufstuff I think I had the same friend. We actually nicely called her out on it, and she went crazy. Cried and yelled at the table. Typical narcissist move. I don't miss her at all.

@Squirrels Are Trash I don't understand how people can be like that. Fortunately I have more considerate friends.
Reading your NicName makes me sad. Do you really dislike squirrels? Have you had a bad experience with them?
We have 30 pine trees and squirrels live in them. We have been feeding them for years. We give them shelled peanuts. We love our outside furbabies and my cat loves watching them and the birds and chipmunks that we feed.
We enjoy watching the baby squirrels running and jumping and just acting crazy, when they leave their nests.
My mother in law used to call them "tree rats".![]()

@Enufstuff We used to call squirrels "rats in haute couture." No, I don't hate them. The screen name just makes me laugh. I guess it's only funny to me. ![]()

Asking for separate checks is common in our area and with our friends. I don't drink and my husband drinks only occasionally, but most of our friends do drink. So splitting the check evenly often doesn't work for us.

Yeah, we usually go out with the same groups and I don't think anyone has ever said separate checks.
What we usually do is pass the check around and takes only a quick second to figure out what you ordered and then you add the tip onto that amount. We always *high ball* our amount-- everyone does.
Sometimes we all put too much into the *pot* and they divvy out what everyone gets back. It's all fair.
I would feel uncomfortable ordering higher dollar amounts in our entrees, ordering alcoholic drinks, and desserts and expecting my friends to have to pay for our indulgences. We're not like that.
