Sending A Copy Of SS Card and Driver License Over The Internet ???

I was thinking of changing phone companies for my landline phone.

The gal was plugging in the information and she asked for my SS card and Drivers License to send copy to the headquarters over the internet. I don't carry my social security card so I need to go back to the store with it so she can send the copy and complete the process.

This is nagging me. Is this common practice these days?? I've never been asked to do this for anything and not sure I want to.
