Selfie = self-absorbed. Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!

Unless you are a Kardashian, no I totally disagree. Its about documenting, sharing with all those you choose to in your life. Who are near or far. Its so easy, so fun and are documented memories. To share back and forth with those that matter to you.

You sure are missing a lot! Don't you have any young people in your family? I love getting selfies from them, seeing where they've been and watching the children grow in shots with their mom.

I don't take selfies of myself. But I took them with my grandkids and or with daughter and son as a group. So I guess that's a groupie? lol. (One takes the pic holding their arm out, as we all pose). My grandkids and daughter are good at this. Somehow they hold the camera at the right angle and get good pics doing this.

Self-portraits have been around for a zillion yrs......it's the advent of social media that flipped the definition to "selfie".

That's why the Oxford Dictionary extended the definition to create the image on smartphone/webcam & to post on social media. The Mona Lisa is not a selfie...it's a portrait. And when Vincent van Gogh painted himself, it's considered a self-portrait....not a selfie. The phrase 'social media' is key to the definition. Make sense? Can't explain it better than that.

According to Urban Dictionary - pictures taken of oneself while holding the camera at arms length.

It's different than using a camera with a timer. Usually they are shared, but not necessarily via social media, but also by testing

Hummm,...be careful when you quote Urban Dictionary.....there's another definition for a 'selfie', but it wouldn't be NSFQ. Here's another tongue-in-cheek definition:

'Selfie': The taking of a picture of yourself and posting it on Facebook because you have extremely low self-esteem and you need people to comment to tell you how hot or pretty you look. In reality you just look desperate for attention. And no matter how attractive you might be, you still look pathetic. See also duck face/kissy face makes you look (silly).

Doesn't change what a selfie is, which is the point of my quote, that your insistence that it must be posted on social media was incorrect.

Unfortunately my insistence is to educate...every Google search one conducts will reflect the social media angle. Can't make this any more simple. Either one gets it or they don't. I have the whole internet on my side, so....out.

I was trying to make light since some here were getting bent out of shape, but I guess this isn't the forum for this. Thought most here had a good sense of humor. (Slumps in chair) :/

Yes, "typically" is not the same thing as "always."

a selfie is a self portrait -- it is slang. Nothing needed about social media.

Your insistence was to educate even though you were wrong and misinterpreted even what YOU posted? Sorry, looks more to me like you just can't admit you missed it....(face palm)
