@SilleeMee wrote:Imo, cursive writing is like the abacus...it's outdated and has no functional purpose any more.
i tend to agree with this.
maybe make it an "option?"
my now adult children know how to read and write cursive, BUT, they do not use it.....at all. in college, nothing handwritten needs to be turned in.
i have seen their notes and they are all printed.
they can write much more quickly by printing than by taking notes in cursive. they can type much more quickly if using an electronic device.

I do think kids should be taught cursive. It may seem outdated and not needed, but I think it's important.
I do think spelling and grammar and writing skills should be taught.
There's only so much time in the day. I know schools have to fit everything in, and cursive is not high up on the list of priorities.
Does that mean my generation was under-educated because time was spent teaching things like cursive, civics, social studies, history and other "groundwork" lessons?

I didn't say that at all.

Cursive writing should have never been removed.
Remember the war over the removal of phonics???
I remember the incredible # of students who couldnt 'sound' out an unknown word, or recognize syllable.
To this day I cant imaginge what the educational PTB were thinking?
I was working on my master's degree at this time and I thought the professors were nuts...but didnt dare counter what they 'dictated' or a flunking grade would ensue.
I saw this occur to another student, who to her amazement, spoke out of turn in an exceptional child ed class and got clobbered by the prof.

My 81 year old neighbor just mentioned how she had to help her grandson w/a research paper - senior in college - some of his resources were items in cursive and he couldn't read them.
That's what makes me sad. How many have grandchildren that will never be able to read what a grandparent wrote.

The responses are very interesting!
All of the opinions have value and are worthy of consideration.

I loved learning and using cursive but I definitely think time is better spent making sure that children know how to read write and do math. Even learning basic life skills is more important than learning cursive.
