I think it's perfectly reasonable for a school to have a dress code, as many businesses do as well. The public HS my kids go to has a very similar dress code.

When I was teaching, I was a member of the school handbook committee. I cannot begin to tell you the nightmare we had when it came to formulating the dress code policy. In addition to the usual things, (short skirts, belly baring, offensive logo, etc) we had to address things like hairy armpits. (mostly male)

Once our BOE adopted the dress code, it was (strictly) enforced. There were some student (and parents) who were defiant, but eventually the problems went away.

A problem we had not anticipated was, once we had a strict dress code for students, parents felt there should be one for school employees. That was an entire different can of worms.

No sleeveless shirts.

Boys were wearing tank tops with exaggerated necks and armholes. Many found them offensive.

I understand from the news this morning that the students at this high school are planning a protest this week about the dress code. ${#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}$ Kids like to test adult limits. One of our local high schools tried to institute a uniform several years ago. It was very reasonable -- either dark or khaki pants (no blue jeans), and light color button down shirt or polo shirt. The students mostly showed up first day of school as required but once a few thumbed their noses at the code, all the other students followed. Problem was, it was not at all enforced by administration and there no consequences either. That was the fatal mistake. Once the students decided how things were going to be, they "ran" the school and set school tone. It was a disaster. IMO parents should be thankful the school is trying to teach some standards and rules.

I remember how miserable it was to be in a school with no air conditioning. But, back then, girls had to wear dresses or skirts to school. So at least we were cooler than the guys in long pants.

It's also distracting to be in a classroom that's so hot you can barely breathe. So either air condition the rooms or initiate a school uniform that takes into account appropriate clothing for those days when it's hot.

I helped lead a school wide protest/walkout in my 8th grade to protest not being allowed to wear pants/jeans in school....they compromised and allowed us to wear pants (dress slacks) but no jeans....it was a huge win for us girls....especially because we lived in the north were winter is pretty cold so being allowed to wear pants/slacks meant we could be warmer on our walk to and from school.

welll in MY day, if you were put to the test of 'getting on your knees and your skirt didn't touch the floor" you were sent home. don't remember wearing pants to school then either. boy am I old.
