Re: ST. PATRICK'S DAY........Will be starting our yearly thread

@Noel7  It used to be every Fri was meatless, then after Vatican 2 in 1969 ,they shortened it to only during Lent.

The meatless Fri started during the middle ages, I think

Re: ST. PATRICK'S DAY........Will be starting our yearly thread

I'm Irish, my great grandparents came here from county Mayo. I've been to Ireland twice.

I will be watching tomorrow when I can. I don't get QVC Plus and I just don't like watching it online. I got the preview email, I think there are fewer than 10 new items. Some expensive jewelry items, a couple of sweaters, and the tsv. Some clearance sweaters too. A couple of years ago I got the "two tone" sweater on clearance-I think they call it plaited? It has a wide collar. Was once a tsv. I never thought I would like that sweater but I love it. Got the pink, it was a one time only on Rose of Tralee or St Pat's.

You can get some good deals online on Irish sweaters, but if they're coming from Ireland they sit in customs for weeks.

@ShowMe  a lot of non catholics didn't eat meat of Fri.   Growing up ,people usually had a time or two during the week, when they opted for a cheaper meal.

McDonalds started the Filet of fish sandwich to bolster their Fri sales ,because they lost a lot of Catholic customers for that day

@ShowMe  and @cherry

SF was heavily Irish-Catholic when I was a kid.  A large neighborhood was pretty much all Irish and is still dotted with Irish bars on every commercial block.  What's new is an Irish bakery and several Irish restaurants.  I just love it.

Also, when I was a kid, we all knew Friday was meatless but everyone said "Fish on Friday" here.  My mother used to make pasta every so often for Friday, but usually it was fresh fish.

Lots of kids grew up with grilled cheese ,and tomato soup on Fridays. It was fast and easy,  many people liked it, and it was filling and cheap

I loved that as a kid!  My Welsh grandmother used to make it for me.  Melted cheese seems to be a Welsh and an Irish thing... Welsh Rabbit is a classic (no, it's not real rabbit, it's cheese, lol).
