Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

Hello,

I just had a new roof installed. The whole process has been a nightmare. I was expecting to get warranty information/paperwork. I have been given nothing.

If anyone has had this done:

Am I supposed to get written warranty information?  The company is acting like that is unreasonable.

I was told the roof would be guaranteed for 50 years, but none of the initial paperwork states anything at all other than the total price and the color of the shingles.

I went through the Home Depot to get it done.

Nothing the salesman told me has actually turned out to be true.

I paid in advance and they also managed to lose the payment information for 2 weeks, even when I submitted proof, they still "couldn't find it in their "system".

This is the first time I have had to have a roof done. The original roof lasted 30 years until Hurricane Michael came through and tore shingles off the roof then I had some leaking into the attic. So I really was clueless and thought Home Depot would be a good option.  Apparently I was wrong.

Thank you in advance for any information.

I had a roof replaced last year....I signed a contract that detailed all materials, work & cleanup to be done, it also included the shingles manufacturer warranty & the roofing company 12yr warranty on their work. The roofer came highly recommended & did a wonderful job. I avoided the big box home stores because I didn't want go get stuck between the store & the installer blaming each other for any problems. Good Luck!

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

@CatLoverDogsToo, I'm sorry for the nightmare you're going through.  About 3-4 years ago we too had a roof replaced.  My husband wanted a very specific roof.  It had to be done by the roofing company's "certified" roofer.  We found one in our area and when we put down the deposit, we were given the warranty.  As the roofing company and the contractor were one and the same no problem.

Two years ago we had windows replaced by Renewal by Anderson.  Again, Anderson supplied both the custom windows and the certified contractors to install them.  Again, we got the warranty up front.

When dealing with third parties there is always finger pointing.  "Well you bought the roof/windows from company XYZ and you had contractor ABC do the work or install it.  It's not the roofing company's/window company's fault it's the installers or visa versa."

In your case, I'd go after Home Depot.  They supplied the contractor who now doesn't want to know you.  Home Depot certainly has deeper pockets than the roofing company they recommended to do the job.  Contact Home Depot corporate if you get no satisfaction from the local Home Depot you used.

Don't give up, be persistent.  You laid out a lot of cash for a new roof.  But in the future, if you need big work, I strongly recommend not to get involved in third party deals.  Good luck!!!  LuLu

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

They should give you a contract. I would call to talk to the manager about getting one.

We have a signed Contract on our roof. It states the breakdown prices on the roof, felt paper, vents, turbines, labor etc. Shows the brand, color how many sq ft., how many year warranty on shingles, how many years labor warranty etc.

How will you get warranty work done without one?

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

I don't think anyone guarantees a roof for 50 years. That sounds like an unreasonable length of time.  Could the 50 years be pertaining to the quality of the shingles used?  I seem to remember when I redid my roof that was how it was worded 30 year or 40 year shingles.

The roofer might have sent the paperwork to your email address.

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

Without knowing anything about the corporate structure of Home Depot, I can report that we had an interesting experience with a Home Depot roof when we moved to our present home about 3 years ago.

We were in the sale process when the realtor representing us called and asked if we’d like to have a new roof.

DH asked how much it would cost, and Ms. Realtor replied “Nothing”.

The original roof, a light color, was stained but functional, but we figured “New? SURE!!”, and went for it. The seller was offering us the option because it was covered by a Home Depot warranty.

After the roofing job was finished, some issues with flashing were revealed, and they were addressed vigorously and repaired, all under an explicit Home Depot warranty.

Everything we or the original seller had done has been as a result of the seller’s warranty.  I don’t remember the duration of our present guarantee, but I’ve never heard of a roof guarantee that exceeded 25 years.

Hope this helps.

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

Since you went through Home Depot your roof was installed by a subcontractor and most likely Home Depot has nothing to do with the warranty.  But if I were you I would go see the HD store manager and tell him/her what a terrible time you have had dealing with them.  I also would ask him/her to see if they could get you a warranty from the contractor.  If the manager is unwilling to help you I would contact the HD corporate headquarters.  YOU, as a customer should not have to go through any problems at all.  If you get to satisfaction from anyone involved file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Good luck, and yes some roof material and work is guarentee for 50 yrs or life time.

Hmm, home depot, probably not a good choice I am sorry to say. We went through HD for our wall to wall a few years ago. Yes we got a guarantee but it was the 2nd group of 2 install guys we were sent to install the 2nd floor. We did the project in 2 installs, had to for obvious reasons. First move out the furn from the 1st floor, move it all back then a month later the 2nd floor. The 1st 2 guys, Mexican, were the BEST. The 2nd 2 guys American totally stinky cigarette smoking aholes were horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  My bedrooms absolutely stunk of those 2 for days, I kid you not!!!!

Here's what's totally wrong in working with places like Home Depot, Menard's, Lowes, they FARM OUT the work they profess they'll do for you with 'home' projects of the like. Terrible, horrible SUBCONTRACTORS who are toss-offs from REAL contractors who DO give you proper warranties, proper work.

My advise? Never go to stores like this unless you're buying goods at lesser amts of money ONLY to truly do it yourself or have your own REAL contractors do the work.

Lesson learned the hard way.

Re: Roof Question (Post installation-warranty)

Try to get satisfaction by going to the Home Depot in person for a start. If they do not help go to the Better Business Bureau. When writing a Bad review of a company you sometimes hear from them very quickly. Never pay in full for any job. When money is owed you always have leverage.
