Rodeo Accident - Warning for Sensitive Folks

BUTLER, Mo. - A 12-year-old Missouri girl's death in a freak rodeo accident has many in her community struggling to find words to express their grief for a family who has lived there for generations.

Kalee Chandler had just finished her barrel-racing run last Saturday night at an event in Adrian for a veterans' charity when her horse, Sarrley, appeared to have a heart attack. The horse slammed into the fence and rolled onto Kalee, pinning her beneath him.

The girl died Monday at a Kansas City hospital and was buried Friday.

"She was given that gift from God to ride," said Tracy Murray, who began coaching Kalee in barrel racing when the girl was 7. "And she'd go so fast and furious. She wasn't there to take second."

I think she was too young to participate but I'm sure those with Rodeo experience will possibly tell me othewise.

Life happens.

Growing up, the family next door had a 19-yr old son who was a bullrider. Fatal accident while riding while riding in an event.  I was 14 at the time.

Just the way it is.

I don't approve of the Rodeo lifestyle, but it is weird the horse had a 'heart attack' while performing. (raised eyebrow)

It's not weird at all - the horse was making his max effort and his heart couldn't do it.

Re: Rodeo Accident - Warning for Sensitive Folks

This little athlete had probably been riding horses since she was 2 or 3 years old. There is nothing like the love of a little girl for her horse. This was obviously some freak accident that can happen to any child in almost any sport. I have been going to the rodeo all my life and I have never seen a barrel horse go down like this one did. Nor have I seen a rider killed. Those horses are athletes just as their riders are. They are worked every day and eat the best foods and have the best veterinary care available. They are groomed and pampered as the partner that they are to the rider. One report I read said that the horse had sped up after the last barrel which "they" said was unusual. Nonsense. The rider always speeds up after the last barrel because this is a timed event and the clock doesn't stop until the rider crosses a certain line and THEN the horse is reined in. My heart goes out to this family. I can't imagine their pain. But this is NOT anything other then a horrible fluke accident. Smiley Sad

I'm sure it is hard for the family. It is very sad. It is true we never know when or how our time will come. That's why we have to live our lives as fully as possible. Seems like kids do that better than anyone.I hope the family will find some peace.

I barrel raced at 12............it wasn't the barrel racing that caused the little girls death..........the horse had a heart attack..........I've actually witnessed an event like that, but it was my friend Connie who was riding a horse from a riding stable and was riding with me........the horse winnied, gave a little kick and fell over dead pinning Connie under him from the knees down............Connie wasn't barrel racing and that horse was too old to probably even run..........................raven

Re: Rodeo Accident - Warning for Sensitive Folks

It's not unusual for even well-loved athletes to have heart attacks and die.  That's what happened last weekend to a horse in a pre-Preakness race and it happens to people.

(TThat should be well-toned athletes)

She was a minor child and in the protection of her parents and now she's deceased. I hope the rules change regarding that type of sport.

@truffle It had nothing to do with sport. Young boys and girls have been riding horses forever. This was a freak accident that could of happened when she was riding at home.

Yes, it is a sad situation but she was doing what she loved.

I started riding with my Father at the age of 2 and got my own horse for my 7th birthday.

LIfe is to be taken day by day because none of us never know if this will be our last.
