What a gorgeous gorgeous tree. Kind of sad that it's going to be cut down.

Was the tree dying from drought? Don't roots sometimes come to the surface looking for water?
We had a maple tree in our front yard that just simply lived out its lifespan. My husband studied the tree and then cut it down so that it wouldn't fall on the house. He chopped it up himself and hauled it to the burn pile in the back pasture.

Tree roots surface for multiple reasons; drought was not an issue with our 100 ft poplar. We were finding huge roots in the front yard thru our septic tank and field lines, so we knew the root system was unstable for anchoring the tree. A top section of the tree was dead. Carpenter ants were heavy on that tree to the point our exterminator was spraying it thru the spring and summer.
I was very suspicious of what was going on internally, and was not surprised at what was found. Taking the tree down cost far less than repairing the property damage if it was hit by lightening or was blown down in a storm. Tall trees are magnets for lightening.

Despite concerns and despair and protestations, I can imagine that the owners of this tree are pleased to see it go. I don't know; merely speculating. They have not yet given interviews, but likely will on cutting down day and beyond.
Rockefeller Center picks up the entire cost of removal and transportation. If one wanted it down, this was fortuitous.

My sister had some huge trees removed from her yard because they were so close to the house.During the last hurricane she could hear branches banging on the metal roof which made a racket. It cost a small fortune too!
