Re: Retesting Elderly Drivers...Opinions

Just a little So. FL humor: why not retest tourists before they can drive here?

I won't even go into some of the things I've seen tourists do, but a short list is:  backing up without brakes on a main road, doing a U turn on the highway, and simply stopping to chat on the phone on a busy thoroughfare.

They all need to know about this thing called "parking lots" where people who are lost can drive and perch briefly and regroup and consult their cell phone.  This doesn't have to be done on a street where it will impede rush hour traffic.

Older drivers?  I think retesting is probably a good idea, and I am no spring chicken myself.  I'd personally like to know before I injure someone.

I would not be opposed to retesting every driver every 10 yrs and after the age of 65 restest every 5.

Hey, I could get it done every 5 right along with my colonoscopy!!!

@qualitygal  Hopefully not at the same time. LOL

...and when that time comes, I hope that I am not selfish and only thinking of my wants and needs. That i can take myself off the road to not be a burdon to other drivers. It is a privilege to drive, not a right. A privilege that can and should be taken away when we can no longer do it right or safely.

Wow, just wow.

Statistics show that people under 25 have a much higher rate of accidents than other ages below 75.   Should we wait until people are 25 to issue drivers licenses too?

Life happens.  Accidents happen at all ages.  It's called being human.

My dad is 85 and drives very well.  He drives the speed limit but not over.   No accidents for as far back as I can remember.

I'm 63 and have never had a ticket.  I was hit by cars in 1974 and in 2015 but neither were my fault.  Gasp!  One car was totaled and the other was fixed.

And when I am 80+, I hope to find people more empathetic and compassionate than you.
