@tends2dogs Thanks.  I am getting so tired of those of us who are good at our job becoming an endangered species or subject to penalty just because the ones who don't work as hard complain that they don't get as much.

If you want to make good money, earn it with hard work and excellent customer service which means good old fashioned manners, politeness, and a really sincere effort.

Applause!  Applause!

I've worked high end to low end retail, and I've enjoyed it all, but there's always that person who wants to slide by but expects a bigger income.  At a high-end store, a college grad thought the job was beneath him and tried to steal commission sales from hourly workers.  At the low end, a worker--in front of the lazy asst. manager--slammed me for working so fast as it made them look bad.

@Blahblahvampemer  High five to you for actually earning the paycheck rather than expecting it because you physically showed up for your scheduled shifts. Hopefully, we're contagious. Smiley Happy

I agree with the restaurant paying their staff higher wages and eliminating tipping.

The New York Times has an article "Danny Meyer Restaurants to Eliminate Tipping" about this topic.

Thanks for posting the name of the restaurant.  Let's hope this catches on!

Danny Meyer runs the museum concessions, Shake Shacks, Blue Smoke and Union Square Cafe....he is not the most altruistic human being.  We served on the Board of Madison Sq Park together, the site of the First Shake Shack....not a fan...I prefer to do my own tipping to show exceptional service or lousy...IMHO

I have always disliked that restaurants got away with paying their staff low wages and having patrons augment servers' income with tips.  It's not that I didn't tip, after all I had three girls who worked after school and college waiting tables.  It was the principle of the thing.

There is now a restaurant chain in NYC that is doing away with tips and raising wait staff and others salaries.  This will now include kitchen and other staff members sharing in the extra $$.

They are going to start with their museum restaurants and slowly branch out to their other restaurants.  Sorry, but I don't know the name of the restaurant chain.

They admit that will mean higher prices for the food, but no higher than an average tip would be.

As for rewarding for excellent service, it will be management who will be doing that, not the patrons.  Hopefully this will work out to the benefit of all.  And imagine not having to figure out tips everytime the check comes.

What do you think?

Why would the restaurant do this?  Hmmmmmm.  Let's see.  It has to do with their bottom line.  They would only do it if it meant more money in their pockets.  Do they think customers will choose their restaurant over others if customers don't have to tip the staff?  I can't imagine the restaurant owners paying the waiters as much as they would make in tips. . .

His restaurants are considered good but only  because of their locations...the fast food like Shake Shack are well traveled areas and the others are in areas with large corporations and they are convenient for quick lunches/meetings...his 11 Mad was very upscale but no longer a Danny Meyer operation...it will work in his current restaurants as people move through fast....it would never be appreciated in 11 Mad nor would it be done there as they have a steady clientele.  It is common in Europe to have the tip included but if we get exceptional service, we still tip.

Off topic: It's similar to that universal-global thing:  All countries equal.  Not one country more successful than the other.  Sounds good, but............

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Restaurant tips . . . finally!

I doubt most servers would be happy making minimum wage and no tips.  Most waiters and waitresses make far more in tips than they would with this pay raise.

Re: Restaurant tips . . . finally!

just heard this on our local news today. joes crab shack (a chain restaurant) will now be testing out "no tipping." it is the first major chain to test this out. we have one fairly close by, but i have never been......too many great local seafood restaurants around town. it will be interesting to see and hear what customers and employees have to say.

I like a no tipping policy, hope it extends to beauty salons. The employees  should be paid by the employer, not the consumer.

Re: Restaurant tips . . . finally!

There is a program titled "Adam Ruins Everything" (I think on Reality TV- stumbled on it the other day) and he addresses this issue - that tips should be eliminated.

Some people do not tip although I would suspect they are few and far.  Some tip as a Scrooge.  Some "over tip".

Perhaps this way it will even out more equitably.

I don't like it, I tip according to quality of service.  And, I don't want to pay more for my food, it's already outrageous.  They are trying this in Cali, not here.
