Re: Remember when QVC stood for Quality,Value and Convenience?

I agree. I stopped watching it a long time ago. In the last 9 months, I have placed one order for a BE TSV. Sadly, for the most part, I have completely lost interest. They have so much more competition with all the etailers out there that they had better step up their game if they want to be around 10 years from now.

That's interesting to hear about credit cards. I haven't read anything about it, but I hope it means people are getting smarter about overextending themselves.

I think some of the home party sales are still successful -- maybe it's sporadic, I don't know. A couple of my cousins have hosted Lia Sophia and Jamberry Nails parties with good results.Smile

As for televised home shopping, I really think they're going to have to come up with new tricks (including solid quality control) or they'll fall by the wayside. The thing that's not going anywhere is online shopping, in my opinion.

Yeah, you can have good parties here and there but bookings, which are the lifeblood of the business, are becoming thinner and thinner in many places. Lia Sophia is one of the ones having problems.

Hi, Scottie! That makes sense, and you know more about it than I do. Maybe it's harder to get people to gather at the same time, especially since online shopping is so easy. And we can do it in our jammies.{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Re: Remember when QVC stood for Quality,Value and Convenience?

Most of their quality items were made in the USA. Now, they're selling the same old junk you can buy anywhere.

This weekend I wore a Fashion Formula long cardigan I bought MANY years ago. I have it in four different colors, and I'm telling you they look brand new today after many wearings and washings. Made in the USA of course.

Same with some Susan Graver blouses I still have that are still stylish. They are also made in the USA. I have a Stan Herman robe that has lasted forever. You know where it was made, right?

As long as they're selling this Chinese garbage, it's going to be a one-season throwaway item. I think many of us long-time QVC buyers have seen the decline of quality and are not happy with what they're selling today.

I buy very little now as compared to what I bought in the past. It's a new world out there.

I can no longer watch QVC. The poor grammar and sentence structure used by some of the hosts is off putting. There is no such phrase as ""underneath of"". One host has used that expression since she started there and nobody has bothered to make her correct it.

QVC will never "get back to that place" as times change. There was no world wide web, no Google, and no Amazon when QVC began. They now exist. Other than house brands, any "neat and unique" items sold on QVC can quickly be found at dozens, hundreds, or thousands at site -- most which offer the product more cheaply due to low overhead (no shopping channel to maintain, lower overhead, little if no marketing).

Just because we want things to return to the way they once were does not mean it can happen. QVC, in order to survive, will continue to focus on house brands or on items such as Vitamix where exclusive deals allow QVC to offer deep discounts. These items sell -- and sell quite well -- despite many here finding them "boring."I

If there is someone on these boards that can offer a sensible, logical, feasible business plan, you may want to apply for a job with QVC. If your only solution is to whine about missing the "good ol' days" while having no real or feasible solutions, what is the point?

Great post!!

Shopping tv was new and with no internet was exciting so it seemed like there were a lot of products and just because of that and not because there was more variety or quality! The early years you had to purchase when a product was aired so more hysteria and sales pressure. This was not so appealing and caused much over buying because of the hype!! Many products were truly junk! I recently found in the back of the closet probably the first steam cleaner which was a cheap plastic thing that you put about a cup of water in and it was heated then sputtered and spattered not really doing anything!! Then there was the gadget that was rechargeable (for not very long either) that was supposed to do the scrubbing for you but took more effort than actual scrubbing! My mother bought me many worthless items so I didn't want to burst her bubble and tell her they were junk and didn't work! I bought many cheaply made earrings that while gold, were so thin and not worth the money paid and gemstones that were tiny and fell out after a few wearings! Then there were the kitchen items that never worked and the pots and pans that didn't last very long! Blankets that definitely were nowhere the fluffiness of the throws sold here today!! There were no beauty products that I can remember also! The 50/50 tours were fun but in this day and age, it's easy for anyone to pitch their products without all the fuss. There were the endless shows of dolls that very few now would purchase! It was a different time and many cling to the past and remember the excitement - not because products were better (and there was only thought to be more variety because there was not internet) - but because the concept was new!!

For me, I find the variety endless at QVC and go to the internet to find new products! The quality in the items I purchase (and I purchase a lot each month as I hate B & M stores) is excellent! I have to add that I purchase very little actual clothing except for some boots as too conservative for me so I can't speak to the quality.

As we age, the past often seems better than it actually was just because of the fond memories of something new and exciting for the time!!

I don't know about that young people not using cc as much. As we were traveling last week we observed young people buying sodas and cigarettes in convenience stores with cc - even though the bill was at times only $1. I told DH what was written here and he said "I'd like some of what that person is smoking."

Actually, my niece works for a national bank and her job is to go to college campuses and "help" students establish bank and cc accounts. She gets commission and she says business is booming.

How do you know it wasn't a debit card?

And that info on young people was in WaPo. 6 in 10 milllenials don't have credit cards.

I had a lot of friends in college who got in trouble with credit card debt. Banks and credit card companies set up tables at orientation and class registration. Rather unscrupulous if you ask me. Jmo.

It is not the bank's responsibility to teach college kids how to care for their finances, it is their parents job, and needs to be done long before college age. This is a parenting failure not the bank's.

Re: Remember when QVC stood for Quality,Value and Convenience?

Occasionally I order things from Q. Two days ago actually on Sunday I ordered some things from 3 different places. My shipping notices tell me that these things will be delivered on 10/14, 10/13, and 10/17. I still something from Q that has been ordered for 3 weeks and no notificatiion as to when I will receive it. I'm not ordering from them anymore.
