We would come home from school and Mom would have put a 5 pound heart shaped box of candy on mine and my siblings beds. If it fell on the weekend then it was at our table place at breakfast. I look back now and cannot believe we each had that much candy. But it sure was fun to open and see all those beautiful colors of chocolate.

@Sooner and @goldensrbest Maybe it's a regional thing. I was in grade school in the 50's, and each student would put a box with a slit on the top to receive Valentine cards. The cards were usually homemade in my day, but today they are sold in packs of about 30 small sized cards. Each student brings a card for all the other students in their homeroom. I wasn't aware they still made homemade Valentine boxes until my daughter sent me a picture.

Oh yeah, I remember making a valentine holder every year for the classmates cards in elementary school. I started 1st grade in '68 we did not do a box but made big decorated pouch type envelopes we taped to the edge of our desk. Then we all walked around delivering our cards to each other. While opening them we ate our treats provided by our Room Mothers. Not as fun a party as the Christmas party in December but still so nice and not doing school work.

@PA Mom-mom Or maybe poorer schools didn't have them? I don't remember much about it, but maybe teacher gave out little single sheet cards. I think a few kids gave them, not everybody got them I do remember. It wasn't a big deal as I recall. No boxes or holders.

Me, either. I think we made oversized construction paper envelopes to put cards in, but never a box.
