I find things like this very sad especially for the less popular kids in class

As I understand and have learned, it is now done so every child gets a valentine and every child gives a valentine to everyone in their class. Not just their friends. It's been that way for years.

Maybe there are some who know if it is not done that way? If not, yes it would be sad and unfair but I can't imagine any teacher letting that happen.

Re: Remember Valentine Boxes?

I remember having a Valentines box. I remember we were instructed to make a card for each school mate. If any child didn't have a box the Teacher had extra so no child was left out.

Re: Remember Valentine Boxes?

I do not remember being told that everyone in the class had to get a valentine, but I truly think that we all gave everyone a card. Some of the cards were 'store bought' (but not fancy by any means) they were all very simple little cards, and some were homemade but plain. No one in my class was 'rich' but a few were better off, and more of us were lower on the income ladder. I don't remember differentiating.

That is so beautiful! You've got a couple of artists in the family!

Re: Remember Valentine Boxes?

Glad to hear Valentines parties still happening.  I do remember making the boxes.  Back then our family had a lot fewer pairs of shoes being purchased, so a box was scarcer in the household.  I enjoyed decorating. Yes, everyone got a card.

Re: Remember Valentine Boxes?

I remember bags we decorated. I think my children did that too.

I know when my children were in elementary school they had to give their cards to their teacher first to make sure they hadn't forgotten anyone. Then they could put them in the bags.

Guess what? These are still a thing. My DD said she and my granddaughter were busy making a Valentine box for Kindergarten. I remember doing that back in the 50's. We used construction paper or wrapping paper over a shoebox and put them on our desks on Valentine's day. They have become a bit more elaborate, but they are still a thing. Who knew? Here's her box:
