Redheads?

Why are people called "red"heads when their hair is clearly orange, not red?
My son has orange hair and has been correcting people who call him a redhead ever since he learned his colors. I have redheaded brothers and have never really thought about it until my son brought it to my attention...now I wonder why too.
Anyone know how it originated?
