In other words, any name change at all had to show official documentation.

It is supposed to be the same things required thruout the nation.

However for a Real ID if you have a current social security card with your current name you should be ok.

That was probably confusing.

@on the bay, as I posted, I'm in California and had to provide my marriage certificate because of the name change.

I have always had the same SS card; it has my maiden name. Do people get updated SS cards?

@suzyQ3, I didn't get an updated SS card but my BFF did.  I had to have a certified copy of my marriage license to verify my name change as well since my name now doesn't match my SS card.  Luckily I had obtained that a few years ago for a cruise since I don't have a passport.

My ss# is in my married name and I brought my marriage license with the county abstract too.  The DMV clerk said those who didn't include the abstract were denied.  The abstract was the actual official document that the marriage license information came off of...was how it was explained to me.  I'm sure there were people who never saved theirs or thought to.  I had my license framed and sitting on a shelve...behind the license I had placed the abstract.

ann1989 what is a county abstract?  When I requested my certified birth certificate and marriage license, that is all I received.

My DL expires in 2024 and now my Real ID has the same expiration date.

I am obviously out of the loop.  Would someone mind explaining to me the need/requirement of a RealID ?  I don't even know what it is, and, I'm not sure I've even heard anything about it.

Not so for all of us.  I always have my driver's license with me, not so with my passport.  

There may be times when I want to take an unplanned  trip somewhere, and I'm at my daughters house.  Passport is at my home, 750 miles away.  That's just one instance.

As of October 1, 2020, You will need a real ID to enter  Federal government buildings or fly on a commercial aircraft.  You will no longer be able to use your regular driver's license

There has already been much talk about extending that deadline. I can’t even imagine the chaos that will ensue at airports next Oct. 1, when many people will still not have their Real IDs!!

Is this a fact?  I hope so.  When I was at the Real ID processing center I was told in late 2021 everyone will be required to have a Real ID regardless of having a passport.  

This was news to me.  I find the whole thing inconsistent and confusing.

    DH & I both got our Real ID this year. We made appointments & were in & out in about 20 minutes. We did have our SS cards.I have a hyphenated last name & had no problem.Some of my proofs had both last names & some had just one.In fact the lady at DMV told me that even though my Read ID will have both last names plus my middle name I should sign it the way I would normally sign my name.So I signed my name without my middle name & my married name only. 
    There was an elderly man there who I felt bad for because he didn't have a birth certificate.He was born in Italy & only had his baptismal certificate.He said he never had a birth certificate. Years ago he was able to get a drivers license with it. But now he was told he needed a birth certificate for a Real ID.They reissued his license but told him he couldn't get the ID.
