@dex  A "regular" driver's license will not be considered valid for airline travel.  It must be a "real" ID but if you have a passport and/or passport "card" I see no point in getting a "real" ID.

????    If you have a current drivers license and a current passport, what is the need for a "real ID".   IMO, There's going to be a real uproar over this.

Hmm .....  I still have my expired passport.  Even though it's expired, you can tell it's still ME.  Maybe I should just get a new passport.

I have both a passport and a passport card yet I'm still going to renew my license early and get "real ID".  I feel it's better to be safe than sorry.  For instance, if I'm away from home and need to make an unexpected trip (funeral, hospital etc).  On the REAL ID website it says you can use a W2 in lieu of a social security card.  Has anybody here done that?(Otherwise I need to get a new card; haven't seen mine in 60 years!!!).

It depends on what state you live in and who you get as an agent.

There appears to be little to no consistency on this Real ID.

I had a W2, passport, driver's license and 5 other pieces of required ID/state residency and I was denied for not bringing the SS card in addition to the above.

you never mentioned what state you are in, but did you go to your states website to see if the W2 was acceptable? if it says it then you should have brought it up at that time. my mom did not have her SS card and was able to use another official document instead of that card.
