@gulf coast girl wrote:It's a pain in the rear for sure. I went 2 weeks ago to renew my drivers license. I am a safe driver, have never once had any accidents. I took all the necessary ****** they want to look at but was denied all because my birth certificate was so darn old and crumpled up looking the woman refused and told me I needed a better looking document. Are you kidding me..... so I came home, got online and paid $27 to have a new copy sent here, still waiting for it. Once it finally gets here than I get the thrill of making another appointment just to get up there and sit and wait. What a bunch of ******.
If I go back I have to pay $30 instead of $20 ( it is $20 to process with a DL renewal). AND I have to pay to have a new license made.
No thank you.

DH is planning to get a Real ID but not me. I have a passport and a passport card. Do not need anything else. Have no idea why they would need a social security card if you already have a passport.
Just came across this article in tonight's Chicago Tribune. Although we had a Real ID in Nevada for a few years, it seems not all states were on board with it.
"Illinois balked at adopting REAL ID for years after the federal mandate was passed in 2005 and originally supposed to be implemented by 2008. Critics of the program have included former U.S. Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano, who sought the repeal of the law putting it into effect." (From the Chicago Tribune.)

My Real ID ordeal was a particularly long, painful and expensive one due to an error in name on my first marriage certificate back in 1970.
I wrote all about it some months back but somehow I lost my original MrsSweetieBear nic and with it all my thousands of posts. I won't go into it all again.
But I knew I had to spend the time and patience and money to rectify the problem with a notorized "Affidavit of Correction" since I don't have a current passport and need the Real ID to fly. Can't take a car or boat to the mainland!

you can also provide a document that has your social security number on it, like a W2 form. a 1099 form (either from the SSA or a non SSA entity), a current pay stub, or a document from SSA demonstrating non-work authorized status.
Yes. I couldn't find my social security card, I looked at the list of approved docs from each category, and they accepted my W2.

@dex A "regular" driver's license will not be considered valid for airline travel. It must be a "real" ID but if you have a passport and/or passport "card" I see no point in getting a "real" ID.

I read about the requirements online, and got all of my documents (plus MORE) together before I went to get my Real ID. The process at the county DMV took about 10 minutes longer that the "regular" license. I'm glad that I did it.

If you have a passport then you are good to go.
I was only going to do it because I thought it would be easy since I did already have a passport. (Ooops I was wrong)
They did say that is 2021 EVERYONE will need a Real ID even if you have a passport. I will believe it when I see it !!!

So how real is a REAL ID if states are doing it differently?????
Oh, the government.......

This is VERY interesting because I was clearly told and shown in writing that (even what you say above )you MUST have the SS card with your current name on it.
PS I did have my W2. It counted toward my ID for residency but I still needed the SS card
Yes, I was too. The other documents could be used for other i.d. purposes, but I still would need the actual Social Security card itself.
