Prehistoric googling is so true. I remember the card catalogues well. And going to the library for research books...if you waited too long all the good ones would be checked out. Heaven forbid should your voice rise above a whisper.
You were lucky if your family had the World Book Encyclopedia.

Definitely! I spent hours, weeks, MAYBE YEARS in the library. (As I sit here now at a computer....thinking "WHAT A WASTE OF VALUABLE TIME").

Yeah, I do. And I remember when you had to be quiet in the library.

I know this sounds rather stupid, but I admit that I don't go to a library except when they have a used book sale, so I don't even know how it works any more when you want to check books out. So, basically, how does it work when you are looking for a book and/or want to check a book out?? I guess I figured that the Dewey system was no longer used, but hadn't thought about it, so didn't know what was the replacement system. Thanks.

Yes, but I still love a visit to the library. Our library is huge, is open 7 days, except summer Memorial Day to Labor Day, they close on Sundays. They are currently remodeling, making it even better. The hours are slightly less since the pandemic. I still love going there.
When we were young, my mom got a Encyclopedia section every week at the grocery store. All went in one binder. We used it all through grade school. It was HUGE. I think of all the encyclopedia salesman back in the day......

There is something wonderful about getting lost in the stacks for hours....visiting sections of the library that you'd never "google."

"Mom...I HAVE to go the library after school"...
Of course, I didn't SAY the rest of it..."To meet my boyfriend"...

My major was Library Science, and that's what the college library had.
