Working hard no longer gets you anywhere. 

 

Used to be a good employee evaluation got you a nice year end bonus. At my company we have noticed since a change in leadership, nobody gets an outstanding rating, thus nobody gets a year end bonus. Quiet cost savings, no doubt. Corporate Greed more like it.

Smaller companies....it is a whole diff world!

 

Family owned or local do not have big Corps. over them......I applaud you for your work ethic.

They would create things.  They would say there's not enough work so you are being let go.  I did file a complaint with the state but way too detailed to go in t o here.  I lost, but in my eyes I won.  Cost them quite a bit to defend themselves (lawyers, execs missing work for hearing, etc).  It cost me gas money and parking.  I won. . . . .

I highly doubt, anyone who is a QVC shopper and is posting here is 'PRIVILEDGED'

 

Hard working men and women who didn't come from anything except HARD WORKING PARENTS who taught us the value of EARNING a living.

 

No one handed my husband and I a thing.  We EARNED it.

 

Priviledge?  Too funny. 

 

My dad woulda got a big laugh outta that one as he worked his way up from poverty...raised by a single widowed mom with 5 kids, who scrubbed on her knees to take care of her family.

I could have gone further with my case  but like your friend I was traumatized by it and just wanted it to be over with.  Oh, and down the line, the 2 execs involved were let go so Karma took care of things.

Gee - back in the 80s, where I worked required we take at least one "continuing education" type class every year.

 

I signed up for one on Time Management - simply because it was offered in a convenient location.

 

One of the discussions - about inefficient employees, some that quit and leave, and those employees that quit and stay.   

 

When back at work .... mentioned topic to boss.  He said he doesn't mind if someone "quits and stays."   When/if the time comes that he's got to cut back on staff - he can eliminate that one and not impact productivity.

Well said.  I think there are people here who haven't worked in decades or ever and the don't understand the work environment as it is now and for the last 20 years or so.  


 


The fortune 500 company that I work for has done just this.  No one in our group minds giving 45 hours.  We are paid well and have good benefits.  Several at the beginning of the pandemic were given retirement packages and now the rest are expected to do 55-60 hours weekly.  We are all salary, no overtime pay.  It’s a good salary for 40, not so great for 60.  Most of us remaining have always been good employees, but if several need to do 60, then we need more staff.  We are slowly only trying to work our 45.  We are not slackers. People are burned out, go find another idiot to do 60 every week.  Yes, our reward for being great, loyal employees.   Our department has great employees in their 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s.  We all work like this.  So it’s not always just an age thing.  

 

I agree, for those who have not been in the work force the last 10-15 years, it IS way different now.  15 years ago, these type of departments had 20-30 staff, now we have 6-8. Believe me, 75% of the corporate work load did not go away, even with new technology.

Yes it's really an insult to blanket call people "slackers" and impugn their character for doing this, especially if you've been out of the working world for decades(or were never in it). Unfair and completely lacking in real world current experienced knowledge.

This is such an interesting buzz topic in the media lately.  Originally it seemed to be how they were labeling the backlash that some workers have done against having to work 50-60 hours instead of 40, having to do the work that two people used to do before downsizing, "working to the contract" instead of being pressured into unpaid overtime, etc.  I don't consider doing your job and working contracted hours to be slacking, but that is what some people think.  Workers today want manageable jobs that can balance with having a family and a life outside of work.  That's not slacking. 

 

Remember:  It's not professional to work when you are not being paid.  That's being a volunteer.  Volunteering is good when it is for a worthy cause, not for your career job.

@JoyFilled Warrior Our Walmart too - they just recently put in way more self checkout counters.  That certainly takes away checkout clerk jobs.
