Question for dog owners- Does Potty Patch work?

I have a friend who just got out of the hospital and she lives alone and has a dog. She will not be able to walk the dog for a couple of weeks and I can't walk the dog either. She wants the dog to go to the bathroom on her patio and I did some research and came across the Potty Patch. I did a google search and some say you can get artificial grass and try that and put pads under it but I want to know any of your experiences with this and if you have any further suggestions.
