Hi Irish. Sorry you are worried and that they left you hanging. A similar thing happened to me about two weeks ago. I went for my very first mammogram, and received "the call". They saw a suspicious spot and wanted to take a more thorough look. I was asked to come in for additional images, a right breast diagnostic, and a bilateral ultrasound. They said that after thorough examination,(and when I say thorough, I mean thorough), it was nothing. However due to extremely dense breast tissue, they want more tests at 6 month intervals, over the next two years. After lengthy discussion with the Dr.'s and techs, I was relieved to find out that it is VERY COMMON to find "something of interest" and have it be nothing to worry about. Good luck to you. I hope all goes well!

Thanks! My report say I have dense breast tissue too!

Apparently they are very thorough if you have dense breasts. This was what she explained to me, she said dense breasts are "glandular" rather than "fatty", and that glandular tissue is cancerous more often than fatty tissue in addition to a problem being more difficult to detect. The Dr. said they always (at their facility) take additional images and spend extra time due to this.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. Like I said this was my first one (even though I should have had one 4 yrs ago). I have to say, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I had heard how painful a mammogram was.

Me too. And because of that, I always have to go for a compression mammogram after my normal mammogram. Those aren't fun, I will tell you that!

Re: Question about mammogram...

I wanted to add two things- first, I have already scheduled a six month follow-up for May. Second, My tests were read while I was still at the site, so I was told immediately that nothing was found.

I got a letter giving the results. My doctor sent me for a mammogram and an ultrasound this week. I got the results for the ultrasound and today the mammogram. No one has told me anything. I put a call in today but haven't got a call back and probably won't until Monday. It makes me mad they would do that without having someone to explain it to you.

I am not panicked but I am concerned and I wish this news would have come from my doctor not from an email or letter with no explanation. Thanks ladies.

What was the report's impression by the radiologist who read the results?
That is what you should be focusing on. Did the radiologist compare your current mammogram with a previous one?

Was your mammogram one of the new 3D versions or was it the standard mammogram?

OP said this is her first mammogram so there is nothing to compare it with, which may be the problem. I got a call back for a compression view on one side and it was a piece of cake. They just focus in a area where they want a better view. It didn't hurt at all and in 10 min they told me it was clear & I could go. They told me that 30% of women get a call back for more films.

I got called back for compression views at the hospital & it wasn't bad at all. Don't make a blanket statement that scares women.

Re: Question about mammogram...

Irshgrl, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. I would never tell you what I think any medical term on a personal report meant because I know I am not a physician qualified to make that call.

However, may I suggest to you in the future to find an imaging center that gives you results immediately. Once I did that, it took a lot of the worry of receiving reports in the mail that I could not decipher. And why is that they always come on a Friday when no one is in the office to help with deciphering them...{#emotions_dlg.sad}

My best to you and please keep us posted how you are doing.

Re: Question about mammogram...

Irsh- wishing you well. I had a similar experience with my first mammogram. I also put it off until my early 40s. A lesson to any young women reading. Don't put it off, even for a year.

Re: Question about mammogram...

Thanks everyone. This was my first one so they didn't have anything to compare it to. I know I should have had one at 40 but I was right in the middle of a lot of problems with Crohns and to be honest, I just didn't feel like dealing with that on top of it. Appreciate all the comments.
