Have you ever had any pelvic fibroids? the two seem to go hand in hand...

Yes, that is why I went for an ultrasound. I just found out I have fibroids. Again, I got an email confirming this but no call from my doctor so I have no idea what they do for fibroids.

What they do for fibroids depends on lots of things. How old you are (they tend to shrink after menopause), how big they are, where exactly they are and if the are causing you any problems.

I had very large fibroids causing me pain. I was at least 20 yrs from menopause, so the answer for me was a Hysterectomy.

Thanks. I am 44 and my mom and sister went through menopause at about 50. I have been having a hard time with that lately (heavy bleeding, lots of pain, sorry TMI) so she sent me for an ultrasound. The report said some were small 2.5 centimeters and some were larger (around an inch).

Thanks Lovescat!

I lived with this for 10 years until I finally gave in and had a hysterectomy when I was 57. I wish I had done it sooner.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.

I have only experienced it for the past 8 months and it is driving me crazy. I never had cramps before and my period was about 4 days and really light. Now I have the worst cramps, my back and legs hurt and I am on my 14th day as of today!!!! It has gotten progressively worse every month. I don't know how you did it for 10 yrs!

Re: Question about mammogram...

Hi Irish. Sorry you are worried and that they left you hanging. A similar thing happened to me about two weeks ago. I went for my very first mammogram, and received "the call". They saw a suspicious spot and wanted to take a more thorough look. I was asked to come in for additional images, a right breast diagnostic, and a bilateral ultrasound. They said that after thorough examination,(and when I say thorough, I mean thorough), it was nothing. However due to extremely dense breast tissue, they want more tests at 6 month intervals, over the next two years. After lengthy discussion with the Dr.'s and techs, I was relieved to find out that it is VERY COMMON to find "something of interest" and have it be nothing to worry about. Good luck to you. I hope all goes well!

Re: Question about mammogram...

Irshgrl, I can't answer your questions, but just saw this thread and wanted to say that I sincerely hope that you get your answers. How I hate when they drop this kind of information at the end of the "work week" and then they expect you to wait through the weekend.

I had a gynecologist call me on a Friday afternoon to tell me he wanted more tests as my pap wasn't normal and that he wanted me to schedule more tests. Then he proceeded to tell me that he was leaving the next week for a 2 week vacation. I had to wait 2 weeks until he returned to have these tests done. Then to top it off, the test was a bit painful and I had to wait another week for the results only to find out that the "lab" lost my results and they wanted me to come in again for another test.

I ended up finding another gynecologist (referral from a friend) and it turned out that after reading my original pap, it was read incorrectly. I was so PO'd. All that unnecessary testing and worrying for nothing.

Sorry I went off topic, but I wanted to stop by and wish you the very best. Please let us know how you are doing.

Apparently they are very thorough if you have dense breasts. This was what she explained to me, she said dense breasts are "glandular" rather than "fatty", and that glandular tissue is cancerous more often than fatty tissue in addition to a problem being more difficult to detect. The Dr. said they always (at their facility) take additional images and spend extra time due to this.

Re: Question about mammogram...

Hi, Irshgrl! My goodness, first you received an email notification and now this. I'm so sorry -- I know no matter how we try it's hard not to be anxious. I've had follow-ups to mammograms before (I have dense breast tissue, too), and each one has ended up being normal. I've usually gotten a phone call followed up by a letter (I suppose that's legal protection). Once I received a registered letter after the results of a pap smear were abnormal but was able to call immediately and schedule a procedure. I'm a worry wart, though, so it was hard to think positively until everything was sorted out.

It's hard to calm our anxiety and you can see by this thread you're not alone. I send prayers and positive thoughts to you.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Re: Question about mammogram...

Thanks everyone. I am not really worried it will be anything bad or deadly. I think I am more worried about going through procedures that are painful and with my Crohns and the surgeries and procedures I have been through with that, I am done! I feel like I have been through enough for a 44 yr old. I know that may sound selfish because a lot of other people have it much worse. I am just over being poked and prodded.

I made the mistake of having them both done in one day. First I get the email and then the "letter". Lol!!
