Question about a new wireless modem I hooked up.

I have a Quest wireless modem. My old one was three years old- this one looks totally different. Like a tower. My question is do the new modems stay on all the time? My old one had a switch that I turned it on and off. The new one has a button in front that you push-It has a red light- but - it does not seem to turn off the modem when I push it. The little green lights keep flashing like it is working. Is this normal? Sorry if I sound crazy- but I am not high tech at all.
