I've lived too many examples of the opposite to believe meanness in kids is anything but a learned behavior that often starts with "innocent" teasing at home. I think what the Director of Student Services said (see my #84) is right on.

Are you in the habit of giving your child everything they ask for? I'm not in fact it is good for them to learn the meaning of the word NO because you hear it a lot in the real world.

No, my daughter didn't get a lot of what she asked for but I wouldn't NOT give her something she wanted because it crossed social norms and made ME uncomfortable. If she was comfortable with it, it didn't hurt anyone and she had been good and I could afford it, I would get it.

The poster wasn't referring to not giving the child something because they indeed had enough stuff but because it isn't normal for a boy to have a My Little Pony backpack.

Well I think it's good to help your child reason for themselves what the consequences may be if he did this or that. It helps them to get into the habit and that's a good thing. That is what parents are for.

I don't disagree with you at all in regards with that. I would definitely sit them down and let them know the possibilities that could happen if they carried that bag and if he still wanted to, I would totally stand by him.

When purchasing school back packs, we stayed away from themed merchandise. I found the popular Disney princess in August, was frequently replaced within a few months. We chose colors that would not show dirt.
