Re: Problems with your car due to discounted gas

I just heard about it here, but apparently it happens a lot if one of the companies has a while deportment that handles complaints about bad gas and car repairs from it. DH's brother works in a car dealership..he said a lot more customers are coming in with engine-related problems, so the gas is the first thing they check now, it seems to be a problem with newer cars. Older cars seem to be more forgiving of diluted gas...he explained it all to DH but my eyes glazed over. Our cars are not new....not even new-ish...but we haven't bought any gas at questionable places either. So far, so good.

Re: Problems with your car due to discounted gas

I always get my gas at the same gas station, a BP. If there's a problem, I have proof from where the gas came. Otherwise, proving it's a particular station at fault may be difficult or impossible. Just because it's the last place you got gas, there would still be gas in your tank from the station before.

@occasionalrain  I thought the same thing. I was surprised they refunded the money for the gas.

The authorities seem to be pretty adept at figuring out where the problem gas is purchased. It seems to be heavily regulated due to the taxes..they do check samples of gas at even the large companies periodically to check for octane level, etc. It's also a good idea to keep the receipt. We get our gas at Costco. Have never had a problem with it so will stick with them.

As far as I know a catalytic converter would not go bad driving from the gas station to the dealer. There had to have been problems before.

Surprising how many people will drive around, wasting gas, looking for cheaper gas. They will drive out of their way to buy gas that is a penny cheaper than places closer to them. Smh.

@Duckncover  this could be happening because the owners are putting regular gas in the newer cars instead of premium. Most dealers would tell the customers this when they buy a new car and it's also in the manual.

True. The article I saw said catalytic converters, fuel pumps, and other parts had been damaged by diluted gas. Some had rough handling right after filling up...so drove to the dealer. Others discovered problems later...using the same diluted gas several times.

I am in California , near Silicon Valley....I don't believe we have discounted gas here. There are cheap stations, here and there...but it is only  couple cents lower.  If that.  The tax alone on our gas is highest in nation, over 52 cents.  I think where I live Costco might have the cheapest gas, but I have no idea how good, or bad it is.   The line is always a mile long.

California legislators are trying to provide relief to drivers facing $6 prices. On Thursday, representatives announced a plan to give every Californian $400 in the form of a gas tax rebate. People don’t have to own or lease a vehicle to qualify.

The $9 billion proposal would be funded by the state's current budget surplus. Everyone, regardless of income, will qualify for the $400 rebate as long as they pay taxes.

A competing proposal to suspend the state's 51-cent gas tax for six months failed to pass on Monday.

This is the problem, why do you not have to prove you have a vehicle? The state of california has a 9 billion surplus budget? Don't think so. Somethings fishy here.

What state do you live in?
