@lovesrecess   Just get the blackout curtain.  You are probably not in the den all the time anyway.   It is a small irritation....do not let it grow into a huge confrontation. Move on and  get over this.

@lovesrecess  FOR NOW, I'd skip all the 'nice notes', banana bread and on and on... Get the blackout curtains. GIve them time to settle in and to see if the problem persists over time. This also gives you time to see if a relationship develops over time. Over the course of a few months it will be clear whether these people are truly a 'problem' or not. Should an even slightly more cordial relationship develop then it would be best to mention the issue face to face and see what results.

I will say, when a good bit younger, I recall my parents put a floodlight in the backyard, only turned on occasionally, and the neighbors behind complained immediately to the police. My parents did change the direction when the police advised us of the problem. I don't think there was anything requiring them to change the lights, but they did it anyway. On the one hand, a visit from the police might get action, but on the other, the relationship between my parents and those neighbors remained strained for years until we moved. Had anyone from that house simply called or asked, the outcome would have been the same and there would have been less tension in the entire neighborhood.

The neighbors are obviously concerned with security, they are also prudent.

They can't know their neighbors' agenda, will they be repeat borrowers, gossips, favor seekers, zealots, minding your business, showing up regularly. It's better to avoid befriending them than trying to unfriend them later.

I know this from experience. I had a neighbor who would join us anytime we came outside and another who was always wanting to borrow: carrots, eggs, lawn mowers, a couple dollars, and even clothing.

They've ignored you four times. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Fear Thy Neighbor, but I'd stay off of their property without a personal invitation. I also wouldn't put tape on their house or attach anything to it.

We don’t open our door if we aren’t expecting someone or don’t recognize them. Our neighborhood has had several instances of criminals knocking on the door just to see if anyone is home, then breaking in. I don’t blame them for not answering, guess DH and I look more threatening than we thought...maybe it’s his white hair...lol

What happened to the time when there was a ¨welcome to the new neighbor?¨

We moved to a new subdivision two years ago, The surrounding neighbors have each others phone numbers. Everyone has cameras and security. I forgot to close the garage door a few days ago when I left home, and one of the neighbors called and told me. I was happy about that and closed the garage door.

These neighbors don´t want to be bothered. but they might realize that they need their neighbors one day.

Would a bb gun work?  JUST KIDDING lol

In california it is illegal to have certain kinds of lights that shine into another home, or onto the street.  I would call the city.  We have a neighborhood community service worker who deals with this kind of stuff. The woman that works in our town is very good at peace making, and has a way of working with neighbors to avoid conflict at all costs.  She is wonderful. I love our town😍

my neighbors in back are a God send.  I have had a couple issues, and so have they.  Everytime each of was was unaware we were causing problems...and we rushed to rectify the issue right away. I did have an issue with their back porch light lighting our bedroom something awful.  He turned the lights down and they turn them off after 11pm.
at one time our many trees and plum tree grew over into their yard and into their pool as well as dropping plums all over with flies.  We cut all our trees back to fence line every year

@lovesrecess, maybe they don´t realize it. Most people would leave a note lettlng them know about the light and see what happens. If they don´t do anything about it, I would just leave them alone.

Please be careful, tread lightly. I watch Fear thy Neighbor on the ID channel it's no joke!
