@Sooner  Just to clarify. Jackie Kennedy made that point about wanting to be a good mother, above all else, in a rambling interview about her own life. Queen Elizabeth was never mentioned or referred to at all. It's not accurate to imply in any way that she was making a dig at the Queen or anybody else for that matter.

@nevergivesup You read a lot in that. I said she had no right to talk about someone leaving their kids, I didn't say she DID. I said she couldn't have.

I'm not sure I understand your point but it doesn't matter. If I  misread your meaning, I'm sorry @Sooner .

@nevergivesup No problem! Just helping me make myself clear for others!  Thank you.  A lot I have read said how often she was not available and out of the country was a sore spot between her and JFK.

@Tinkrbl44 Well we can all be proud that we've NEVER voted in and had an adulterer head our squeaky clean country!  The very thought of it huh?

@Sooner

Let's not compare apples to oranges here.

Yes, there are plenty of people holding political office everywhere who aren't squeaky clean.

No argument there.

Compare that to Charles ... who (supposedly) is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

Wouldn't you expect the head of any church to be a moral, upstanding individual?   Is "ethical" too much to ask?

He's acting pretty self-righteous with his brother now.

ETA, Princess Margret was the wild child.  They were always monitoring, and censoring her life as well. She was over here in US, partying, doing drugs and a huge drinker.  Indeed she was a beautiful, opinionated free spirited woman.  She was lucky she didn't do all that in the computer age, lol.

Funny, I read an article recently that while the queen mother never drank while pregnant with Elizabeth, she drank like a fish when pregnant with Margaret.

She displayed many characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome ... or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, which can cause many physical and mental defects, not to mention behavior abnormalities.

It seems Margaret got the short end of the stick with her parents, too.

I've watched videos on the childhoods of QE and Margaret which I found interesting. Regarding Princess Margaret getting "the short end of the stick" with her parents, the docs I watched showed King George as a loving father who adored his daughters, especially Margaret. What I found kind of endearing was he referred to Elizabeth as his "pride" and Margaret as his "joy". Don't know much about the Queen Mum.

@Tinkrbl44 what they didn't realize back then!  Not to mention the smoking!   Poor Margaret sure did get the fuzzy end of the lollipop for sure.  She really had a devil may care attitude!   I think margaret and the Queen were very tight, and Margaret's death effected the Queen very much . Probably the only person in the world she could talk to  about life. I can't remember if it was late 60's, or early 70's, but one of the times Margaret came to US. They had scathing photos of her at Studio 54,  the Monarchy tried so hard to stifle those. lol. We were loving it, the Brits not so much lol

@Tinkrbl44

I saw an article about the book and Secrest only speculates, even indicating that Margaret lacked the tell tell signs of FAS in her lip and eyes.

Small stature, learning difficulties, mood swings etc. are speculation.
Although FAS was not recognized until the 1970's all persons are deceased.

With no absolute medical diagnosis Margaret could have been bi-polar or had learning difficulties unrelated to FAS or any other myriad of issues.

Or she simply could have just been an unrestrained free thinking woman.

I'm not keen on speculation and even if there's proof all parties are now gone.

Since FAS has been recognized for 50 years or so along with the effects of smoking and certain meds while pregnant I just do not see the point of her book.

What Charles is doing is because he is the head of state and it is an action he has to take at some point for England.  In his role (not sought by him by the way but born to) duty comes above family.  I'm sure it isn't easy for him.

It is far easier to throw stones than be worthy of throwing stones.  I do not think perfection is the role of any head of state or even church leader.  We are all human and all have flaws.  We all need forgiveness for something.

I do not envy Charles in this position.  Charles has had a lot in his life that wasn't what he wanted, but what was put on him--even that marriage to Diana.  And in his aged years, with illness and family issues all over the globe, no I sure wouldn't trade places with him.  I can't even imagine all that guy is going through now.

He's taken a lot of grief for his looks (people have always made fun of him for that), for his "silly" passion for ecology and nature and plants (a man far ahead of his time), and all sorts of things and is holding on and seemingly doing the best he can at what cost to him nobody really knows.  It's his duty vs. his idiot brother.  Just glad it isn't me having to deal with all that.

@Cakers3

All I can say is that Elizabeth's mother had her daily martini for decades, going back to her childbearing years. That is well-documented.

Back then, perhaps no one gave thought to whether or not a pregnant woman should consume alcohol.

In 2025, we all know that alcohol can affect fetal development and should be avoided.

Even if all parties were still alive, there's no telling how much of their medical records would ever see the light of day.

He is the best example of 'Evil always wins'.  None of the things they do means anything.  He belongs in jail with the rest of the Eppstein crew many of them in our Government. The excesses of the rich and powerful are so over the top.  I blame every day people who act like sheep and allow all of this to happen.
