Melanoma is unlike basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (the three types of skin cancer). Basal cells are almost always self contained and when removed it's end of story. Usually the same for squamous cell, but it can spread to other organs, though it's not common.
Melanoma is a killer - very often. It depends on the depth when caught and first removed, and whether it's spread to a lymph node. It can spread to just about every major organ, and once it does - also end of story, but not happy ending. It is generally deadly unless caught early and treated aggressively.
Moon.......I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face....... I have been undergoing treatment for this kind of cancer since the end of January. Found your post on here very-upsetting and certainly not a morale builder for anyone going through this...
It was found when I had my mammogram done. It showed up just at the end of my right breast going into my right under arm area. It was an enlarged lymph node. The technician took a 2nd mammo of the right side. Results were not what I wanted to hear when my doctor called me. Mind started from a growth on the middle of my back (external) I remember all the following days of testing, scans, biopsy, etc.......to the first treatment, and up until right now. Still have the enlarged lymph node (but it is shrinking), and also a spot was found in the upper lobe of my right lung. So, it has hit me in several places. Had one kind of chemo for 4 treatments, then he now has me on another kind. The first was very toxic. and this one is very potent. Believe me, I know they both have made me feel different.
I am sure you didn't intend for your post to upset anyone, but just had to let you know it upset me a lot. I am fighting a long hard battle......And am hoping and praying that I will make it to remission, and beyond.
Normally I wouldn't say anything, but this has really upset me this evening.

@ShowMe, I'm sorry that my post upset you. It was not my intention to upset anyone by providing information about a disease that many people do not understand the seriousness of. I responding to another poster's surprise that the disease is a serious one, that many know little about.
I work with melanoma as a disease, and its patients, on a daily basis, so "getting the word out" is important to me.

MOON was just clearing up some misconceptions on the different types of cancer, she DID NOT intend to upset anyone. Knowledge is a good thjng, the more knowledgeable you can be about something, the stronger you can become fighting it....I DO wish you health and happiness and a good outcome

Apology accepted......But maybe you could have been a little more gentler because you never know who is reading on here and how it can make them feel when it is so close......working with these kinds of patients is different than fighting the battle for your life. Yes, it is important for people to be aware of it, and you took me by surprise with what you wrote.

Please don't feel bad moonchilde. Education is extremely important and many of us didn't know much about melanoma. I'm sorry another poster is upset but that needs to be tempered with the fact we all probably learned something important today.

Thanks, mystyrion & stazgirl.
I also have a friend, an RN, with melanoma. She has been very lucky, and understands how lucky.
It's not a bad idea to visit a dermatologist for an "anywhere and everywhere" evaluation. They search over your body and into every crevice, where you couldn't look yourself.
People are surprised to learn that melanoma is not uncommonly found in places on the body where the sun don't shine, on the bottom of feet, in the mouth - places you'd never imagine. So it's not just a sun exposure disease.
Because of all the sun they get and their position re the equator, Australia is way ahead of us in prevention and proactive knowledge. The US needs to catch up.

ShowMe, I know that you know that moonchilde did not willfully try to upset anyone. But I surely can understand that your reading her post at this time in your life might be very difficult.
I am so sorry that you are going through this struggle. I will think only good thoughts for you in your battle. Please do not at all apologize for your posts. I imagine that it must help to be able to vent and to know that so many have you in their thoughts. .

ShowMe, I want to echo suzy's thoughts.
I understand how you are feeling, there was a time I was there, also. I am so sorry you have to deal with a lot of pain and suffering. So many of us care about you and are praying for you ![]()

I think it's important to remember that each of our own conditions and experiences are uniquely our own. What happens to others does not necessarily bear on what will happen to you. I firmly believe that a positive mind and spirit (and faith in a higher power helps too) can do wonders for fighting disease and recovery.
