Praying for India

[ Edited ]

I'm feeling very sorry to see the pandemic ravage India. They had over 350,000 new COVID cases in one day. They are out of oxygen and they don't have enough vaccine. We and other countries are sending them items necessary to make more vaccine. I wish all the people well.

I just heard only 2% of the population has been vaccinated.

It's horrible what is happening in India.  They do have an enormous population (second to China)  so though the daily death COVID infection rate is very high, they do have the population to deal with. They are also entering their summer season.  In cental and southern India, the heat is strong enough to kill many. The bulk of their population is under 30.  So some are young enough to survive COVID and their deadly heat.

And I saw on the news earlier this week that a huge, and I mean huge, outdoor festival was allowed. I think the government is answerable to this.

Thousands packed together, on the land and in the river. What is to be expected after something like that?

Have seen all the news reports about mass cremations and people allowed to bury their dead any place they can find room including in their own yards. Just terrible.

Indian government has been exporting oxygen this year! In fact, according to a New Delhi newspaper, O2 exports rose 700% in Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020. The government has also ordered cracking down on social media posts that criticize it. Hospital workers are operating in unsafe conditions without proper PPE. People are dying in hospital parking lots waiting to get seen. Everything is full.

What a lot of people don't understand is that to control the virus,it must be controlled everywhere. With the number of cases in India, it becomes a petri dish in which variants can replicate. Some may even defy the ability of the vaccine to be effective. The main reason to help India is because it is the right and decent thing to do for fellow human beings.

@Love my grandkids @I think it was a religious festival. I think it's called Diwali. They have so many festivals. The government will have an extremely difficult time trying to message so many people without access to media and with so much long standing lack of health information and basic understanding among the many uneducated people. Controlling the virus will be incredibly hard there.

@Mindy D   @Love my grandkids

It's a Hindu festival which is held every year leading/ending in the Ganges River.  Usually over a million Hindus attend/participate.

Besides the way my heart feels about the Indian people suffering, my practical side is thinking of the implications this crisis will have upon the US and the rest of the world. Chances are that the crisis in India will affect our supplies over here. I expect shortages of medications. It's also very important to realize that the fight against COVID in one country directly affects the rise of new variants that will affect other countries.
