Just watching what happened, it did look like it could have been from blunt trauma to the anterior chest wall, disrupting the heart rhythm and circulation. People are wondering how he was able to stand up and take a couple of steps.

You have about 5 to 8 seconds after the last heartbeat before collapsing. The rescue response was as quick as one might expect under the circumstances, but every second counts.

At this point, he's young, and presumably healthy, and an athlete, which ups his odds for recovery once stabilized, but I will be praying that he was oxygenated, fast enough, and well enough, for a full recovery.

Such a sad situation for this lovely young man, with such a great future ahead of him. I can't imagine his mom witnessing this event from the stands. Prayers for all of them.

And, yes, the game should have been canceled. People watched this player die on the field, requiring resuscitation. This is much different than a player who is carried off due to some orthopedic injury (although we hate to see any injuries), who's able to wave to the fans. Much different.

@brandiwine

Who are you talking about when you say "so many other young, healthy adults are collapsing and dying"?

I won't go into details--you can look for yourself-- because I don't want to hijack the thred and this guy needs prayers right now but there was a spike in deaths (heart attacks/sudden collapse) with European Football (soccer) players.  Life insurance companies have reported a spike ( I want to say up 43% but don't quote me) in non-covid deaths in the age group of 18-49 yo. I don't watch mainstream news so I have no clue if this was reported.  People won't like what I just posted but I think things like this need to be questioned and closely looked at.  Doesn't seem right.  BTW, the European soccer players I saw die on the field (on TV) fell back just like this football player. Some players didn't even have contact with another individual, some were just running hard. It's eerie.

I don't understand all the ganging up on @SurferWife. She just posted what she thought.  Disagreeing is one thing but some of these other responses are filled with contempt and personal attacks.  I don't understand that. Quite a sad commentary on society. Hope my answer helped.

Re: Prayers for the Bills

If you want to contribute to Damar's GoFundMe, it's called "The Chasing M's Foundation Community Toy Drive."  I'd provide the link but don't know if that's allowed.  It's raised over $4.4 million since last night.  It's really heart-warming to read the words of support left there by people all over the country and even outside the country.

Damar has his whole life ahead of him and I pray that he comes out of this.  I watched ESPN at noon and they said he will be sedated for about 24 hrs and will slowly be brought back to see how he reacts brain wise.  He is also intubated.  I'm just telling what they said........

I have been so worried about the brain aspect of his condition.  I hope they got the oxygen to him in time.

My gosh, this is heart breaking.  As I was watching last night at that empty field, I thought......there should be no question about postponing the game.  How could any of those guys possibly go back out there????  Way too much trauma for both teams!

Wow, it seems that my post fueled a lot of controversy and took a direction I didn’t anticipate. I rarely respond to another individual’s post in a direct manner because it can easily lead to a back and forth thing which I like to avoid. I respect the right of everyone to express an opinion and think that there is always a chance to find common ground which, Lord knows, we need these days.

I asked @surfer wife how she and those that hearted her response immediately could possibly know that Damar’s condition was not due to an injury when the top medical community said otherwise. I still don’t understand that. As for me, I did not attack her, even offered an apology in advance if I misinterpreted her post. I don’t take responsibility for anyone else’s comments.

At the end of the day I want to believe that everyone on these forums wishes healing for this young man.

I have always been glad my grandson plays baseball and was never interested in playing football. It is a very dangerous sport, even when the hits are deemed "clean" or fair. I pray for his mother who was in the stands and I would assume she is now with her son at the hospital. I pray he pulls through and he got immediate medical care, so that is a positive.

Commotio cordis is more common in youth baseball than it is in the NFL.

He didn't collapse because of being injured.  He made a tackle, jumped back to his feet then seconds later collapsed, like so many other young, healthy adults are collapsing and dying, but we don't hear about most of them.  I'll refrain from opining further.

HEARTLESS!

@JaneMarple   Really?  Right or wrong, God forbid somebody has a different opinion than you.  You Are a bully.  Hope that avatar is JUST the elderly spinster detective.
