Floors are meant to be walked upon and can be cleaned. What about furniture; how can you know where a guest has sat prior to entering your home? Sidewalks, roads, parking lots are washed by rain and the sun heats and kills any germs that may be there. Hands and bare feet are less sanitary than shoes. I know of no one getting a fungal infection from the soles of shoes.
To expect a guest to remove their shoes is insulting.

I don't know if shoes are any dirtier than anything else? Everything is covered with germs. As long as people aren't tracking in mud ,or worse, it doesn't bother me...

Are guests of the White House asked to remove their shoes? Do you think that guests at Buckingham place are asked to remove their shoes. I don't think so. And i dont think they bring new clean shoes and or socks. If you are so concerned about your carpets and floors don't invite guests to your home. Asking guests to remove their shoes is rude. it is the responsibility of the host to make all of their guests feel comfortable and welcome.

I prefer my guests be at ease and comfortable so I don’t greet them with demands. Just a smile will do.
I do find it odd that someone whose dogs have the roam of the house have a problem with people’s shoes.

You should be told ahead of time for a party if you are going to be required to take your shoes off. I have one neighbor that requires that and I just do not go into their house and I would never ask someone to take their shoes off in mine. I take shoes or bare feet anyday.

I once had a neighbor and we got along really well. She was a shoes off person I was a I don't really care, leave them on or off. It was a running joke all the time. I never told her but when she would go away and I would care for her dogs, I never took my shoes off. When she watched my pets, who knows or cares what she would do.
Sometimes when she would leave her shoes outside my door, I would joke and tell her no one comes in my house barefoot, put the dang shoes on! When I would go to her house I had to leave my shoes in the garage.
lol. when we had hurricanes she bought a generated so she could vacuum.
