Follow-up story in last nite's UK mirror on girl mauled by her pitbulls last week in VA . I'm not posting links but you can google if you care to read.
"Human HAIR found in faeces of pit bulls that 'mauled to death 22-year-old owner' as she walked them in woods .."
Glad I have a chihuahua.
SMH ..

article:
"The animals had previously lived indoors. However, they had recently been in an outdoor kennel at her father's home with very little human contact, the sheriff added."
WHY people leave their dogs outside year round is beyond me. I see them in yards all the time when I'm walking. (see my post 4 posts back)
And it IS COLD in VA!

I had very mixed feelings about pit bulls, until my daughter got a puppy.
Zyra, better known as Zazzy Zee, and ZZ, was the biggest baby who thought she was a 72pound puppy. When they lived with me, I woke up with thousands of kisses for Grandmommy. When she slept in our bed...umm..her bed...she slept either at my feet, or in between my husband and me. Our Cocker Spaniel, was there too...thank goodness we have a king sized bed. Unfortunately, we lost her to a very fast car, who didn’t even stop to see what they hit. 😪
My daughter now has three pitbulls, one of which is ZZ’s half sister. Looks just like her, and is as sweet as sweet can be. As are the others.
I know now there are many owners out there that treat their dogs badly. Chaining them up to a tree..outside, is bad. And cruel.

Where I live the dog is put down after the second attack.
My son’s neighbor’s visitor who came onto son’s property uninvited and unknown to son, stuck out her hand to his dog and got bitten on her finger. The dog was deep within son’s property lines at the time and had a perimeter collar on that the dog respects. Dog did not chase the woman and never left perimeter.
The woman trespassed onto my son’s property. Nevertheless, his dog now has one bite on record and if she bites anyone again, she will be euthanized. She’s 6 and this never happened before.
Son now puts muzzle on her EVERY time she goes out, which is basically only to relieve herself or to go for a walk on a leash. The dog isn’t a pit bull.

So sad to hear that. My rule with animals I don't know is always to let them approach me - and never to try to touch them without their permission. Wish more people would follow this.

My mom is 81 and walks and I worry about her and dogs.
Any dog of any breed at any time has the potential to bite or attack.
We have had German Shepherds, Dachshunds, Pugs, Border Collies, and now a Boxer Pit Bull mix. I've had a healthy respect for each and every one, and treat them all like they could bite at any time.
No dog should be left outside unsupervised, regardless of chains, fences, gates etc. And any time children are in my home, my dogs have always been put in another area of the house. Every dog was gentle (except the Dachshunds), but I wouldn't take any chances with other people's children.

I'd never heard Dachshunds were a problem. Interesting. We play duplicate bridge at a senior center and there is a Dachshund there (not sure if he belongs to a specific resident or if he's just part of the Center), but he's very friendly and I've petted him (after he came to me and sniffed me and then nuzzled me). He seems to like everyone - but then since he's at the Center - and runs free, I assume he's been screened or something.

Not true. Each state, city, county have their own regulations and protocol for dog bite cases.
Just google it.

DS and wife wanted to adopt a dog. Her sister had a pit bull. DS showed me a picture of a dog they were considering for their first pet: a pit bull. I was not happy. Said I would not ever have the dog in my house with my dog and me- would never care for it in my home when they traveled. They hope for children in the future. A pit bull?!
They adopted a different breed and she is as sweet and gentle as can be. I gladly care for her in my home with my dog. She is wonderful with people and other animals. No worries.

**** no can of mace is gonna stop a pit bull. Saw on Good Morning America where a pit killed a kid and there were 3 men trying to get him off the kid using brooms whatever was handy. You can't stop those things unless like my hubbo said you pop a cap in their brains.
