Phones and computers and thunderstorms

Do you get off your computer and stay off the phone, cell or land, during a big thunderstorm? My friend always gets off her PC and won't talk on the phone when a storm rolls in. I continue to watch the TV until the power goes out, but that's it. I am talking about a heavy thunderstorm, not a tornado or hurricane obviously.

Businesses, hospitals and everything outside of the home don't shut down during a storm, so what is the difference at home?
