@chrystaltree wrote:Okay but to be honest, I don't think I have ever seen anyone on this board give out personal information. For the most part, people don't even give out the names of friends, spouses or what town they live in.
that's one thing I like about this board, it is very anonymous.
PM capablility would be nice but we have managed so far without;

@MaggieMack wrote:I even hate having my picture taken anymore. At my Kiwanis Club meeting today, they went over our website and new Facebook page. When I asked if the FB page was private, they said, no, public. I then had to explain that was exactly why I don't want my picture taken and don't want any pics of me appearing on a public page. I think most of them thought I was overreacting, but when I explained about facial recognition, gps locations, etc from pictures, the light bulb started to flicker on.
My avatar is not at my home location. It is hundreds of miles away.
Totally agree, I took all my pics off my Facebook, and just recently defriended a bunch of people. My use of FB is changing as well, more as a resource than connecting with friends.

@terrier3 wrote:I posted a picture of my house a few years ago here because my garden was featured in a magazine - I'll admit, I was proud of that! The pic had the street number of my house because it's next to my front door. Not the street name, just the number.
Someone, somehow tracked it down and posted how much my house was worth and where it was located, on another board.
I wasn't a member of that board, but when I joined later, the threads were there.. The poster eventually apologized for doing that.
After I was booted from that board, the mod (who obviously had my e-mail address) posted stuff from my FB page. The venom was ridiculous, IMO.
I learned a valuable lesson.
Rest assured absolutely NOTHING was ever posted from your Facebook page when you left. No venom whatsoever. I hope this puts your mind at rest that both mods are people with integrity. If they were not, I would not post there.

@fortune wrote:Since we don't know who visits our boards, it's a good idea to not put personal info in your posts. Examples: what company your family owns, the name and location of your property (land, etc.), your own name, your wealth and possessions, etc. With very little effort, someone can track you down. Maybe our moderators can list some examples of stuff we shouldn't reveal!
There are a few that do this repeatedly and release personal information of family members. They don't like being warned off of continuing this unwise course of action. Why that is, I don't know........

I was trying to find my friend's zip code so I put in her name and address on the internet. Well, every thing came up not only about her but her neighbors, everyone's house, who'd owned it, what they paid for their houses and on and on.
If I'd wanted to pay $9.99 I could really find out a lot about my friend and her family. This free website told me how many people were living within a mile radius that had been in trouble with the law and listed their offenses.
It was crazy! All because I was trying to find out their zip code! There isn't any such thing as privacy.
Friends of mine pay extra money to not have their land line phones number listed. They don't buy anything on the internet. Instead they ask me to buy it and have it sent to my house and they pay me.
Hummm??? It's nice to think there is such a thing as privacy but I don't think it exists anymore. I don't worry about it so much anymore. I posted one example on here already.
I don't know about that Annabelle. Putting in just a name does not give that much information unless you are on one of those website like people search and the free part lists the name and all addresses that they lived in, not how much they paid for the house. But I have never spent any money trying to find out more info, however, there was a poster on here who did that so she could find out more information on a friend's boyfriend.
However, the auditor's website in every city shows real estate transactions and you absolutely can see what everyone paid for a house they bought, who they bought it fro, how much tax they pay and any improvements on the property. That is public information. You can also search by the parcel number or street address. If I am looking to buy a home and want to bid, I research that information first. If someone bought a house say for $50,000 2 years ago to flip it and now tries to sell for $150,000, I am not interested unless they can show me exactly how much they paid in renovations to up the price 150%.
Anyway public records databases are out there for real estate, births, deaths, divorces, traffic offenses, civil and criminal court cases. That kind of information has always been available as far as I know so very little is private. How do you think these rags like TMZ get ahold of personal divorce settlements and such?
@Annabellethecat66 pretty much has it right. Put in your name and address and the property records are available for free. You dont even need the name. These are public records anyway. These records have been available for many years. But what is interesting now is that there are websites that have integrated property records and phone numbers. The first one that came up for me is Homemetry i believe. For free there i was with my home with its history and what i paid and my phone number which has been unlisted for years! HaHa! Another free click and i had could have the same for any of my neighbors. Once you have the name you are looking for and the age then you can pay maybe 10.00 and do other background checks, all keying off of public records. So anyone bent on bad deeds can find you. @Annabellethecat66 I dont know about buying stuff that way for your neighbor.. Are they in the witness protection program???? 😁

I'm not saying it was OK for someone to post info about your home, but you did post the street name.

Well, I can't speak for any of the other sites, but I wouldn't count on any info found on the homemetry website. I just tried it out of curiousity with my home address and most of the information was wrong. And not just slightly wrong, but wildly wrong. The only thing they got right was that DH & I are the homeowners. Our ages, education and ethnic origins are all extremely way off base. But I did get my laugh for the day, because it said that I'm 28 years old! Good thing Medicare isn't using that site as a reference, ha ha.

At the time of the revision of this forum, QVC recommended that we all post our personal photos as our avatars. Some of us did, but most did not and still do not.
Obviously, my avatar is a photo of me. I have right-clicked on it and there is no connection to google wherein someone can find out personal information about me. Perhaps it's a question of which browser one uses. I use IE 7.
I would not mind at all, if someone here has the interest, that they click on my avatar and post back here all of the personal information about me they may find.
Personally, I would never even consider doing that to someone, as I have absolutely no interest in the personal information of anyone here. But obviously others feel differently.
Therefore, as I said, feel free to find me via my avatar. It would be interesting to see if that can actually work.

The same poster also solicited votes for her dog who was in some kind of contest. Many folks here responded and voted, online, for the dog. I can understand wanting votes but if seemed foolish to put such personal info on a public board along with other personal info which was already posted here.

Lilac, it isn't very wise to put that challenge out here. Someone, or several someones, may just take you up on it. Not a snark. Just some friendly advice.
