Posting personal information is naive. More than once I've witnessed someone posting their email address for another particular poster. Can you imagine how many people saw those posts before they were deleted by the original poster or a moderator? Posting personal information on an anonymous forum is unwise and lacks good judgement.
I also recall a person posting personal information about their family, including business, address, college information, favorite team, etc. I haven't seen them on the forum for a while.

I know this isn't exactly what is being discussed here, but it's related in terms of not wise to post email addresses:
It was my understanding that eventually, it had at one time been intended by QVC to activate a feature on the forums so that if they chose to allow it, other posters could send people private messages. To my knowledge this has not been activated and QVC may have changed its mind; the feature could certainly also be used for ill.
Many people here want to give their email addresses to certain other forum friends (yet not the population at large), and presently there is no way to do this except post it, then delete it in 5-10 minutes and hope no one saw it that wants to do you ill. Not an ideal situation. I wish QVC would enable something so this could be done privately. Not for me, as I don't have much interest, but many do. The way things are now for doing this is risky.

This is true, @Noel7!
And no doubt many internet-security-savvy people do that on purpose, either to protect themselves or to mess with everyone's minds.
you do realize that many posters have given each other email addresses and also belong to FB forums where one has to be invited to be a member. These people all know each other's real names and where they live, except for the random few who open up FB accounts using only nicknames so that they never reveal their true identities,
In addition there are other forums that track you by your IP address. That made me extremely uncomfortable when I started to see the true nature of some of the members especially the ones who monitor the sites.

I've learned posters real names that same way. I would never do anything with the information either but my thought was "wow. look how easy that was."

And any of these situations can turn on you justlikethat. It's why I don't recommend that people have FB friends they don't know in real life or know very well indeed. If a group of people are into doing, or threatening the ability to do...things they shouldn't...with information that has been shared, it can be turned against *anyone*, even BFFs. IMO it's not worth the risk. But absolutely there are naive and trusting people out there who assume the best about everyone. Me, not so much.

After reading this thread I am even more sure that my never having a facebook page was a wise decision. Sometimes my friends and family will encourage me to join, but I tell them that they can give me a call anytime they feel like it.

Quite a while ago, some of us on the Dooney forum posted throwaway email addy's to 'connect' with other posters there.
Eventually 5-6 of us connected with our true identities, pics, etc, even b'day & Christmas gifts (nothing big) and we remain friends today.
Some of us chat on the phone and a couple have even met in person.
But there's nothing personal posted on any public forums, and email addys can always be changed.
You'd be surprised how many posters here have IRL communication, I know many posters here who do!

It's no big deal, but you have to decide how much you value your privacy and set your account up accordingly. If you're invited to join, but don't want to join, a FB group, just don't join it. On your own FB, no one can see anything that you make totally private (including photos) *unless you Friend them and give them permission.*
But your Friends are capable of passing your info along to others who you might not want to have it. So again, you'd better know your Friends and family in person and/or trust them totally. Loyalties change and spats happen.
If people are exchanging email addresses and you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. If people are less friendly to you because you don't, remember all it takes is one tiff, and you never know what people will do with their knowledge. You may be the smart one in the long run.

Okay but to be honest, I don't think I have ever seen anyone on this board give out personal information. For the most part, people don't even give out the names of friends, spouses or what town they live in.

Are you sure? Just give me the name and address of your bank and the account number and I'll check for you....lol
