Yes, they add fillers.

 

You don't have to grate your own, though, although I often do.  You can find fresh grated Parmesan and Parmesan mixes at Trader Joe's. You can check the ingredients, I don't think they have fillers.

Nothing is more gross than rennet in cheese.  IMO.

I don't know why anyone would buy Parmesan in a can. I ALWAYS buy it in block form and grate it myself.

My mom used to buy that parmesan that was stored on the shelf of the market....for who knows...how long?

I never knew how good this cheese was, until I either bought the fresh version, and grated it myself, or bought the deli version...freshly grated.  

 

Cheese should be sold fresh!  If it's sitting on a shelf...just say no.

Please buy it in a block and grate it as needed.  That way it stays fresh and makes a big difference.  Try to get one that is marked parmegiano/oregiano (sp).  Today, who knows what is in what food product.  We are at the mercy of the growers.  Each summer I am lucky enough to get a mother's day present that includes a subscription to CSA farm where you buy directly from the farmer.  It helps the farmer as well as the consumer. I live in Connecticut where in the summer you are no more than 10 minutes away from a farm that sells their own produce.
