Maybe people should put the blame on the shooter, where it belongs, instead of trying to find others responsible.
So many times we are told a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. So is that not true or was he not a good guy?

@scatcat I am not sure he will but I am hoping he carries the burden with him all his life he did NOTHING, NOTHING to try to save even one life...a weak, pathetic coward.
He would have been blown away. What would have been the point? All those dead children and teachers plus a security guard?
I would not martyr myself either. As much as 'd like to think I'd be brave. Someone with a handgun is no match for a person spraying semi automatic bullets in a school hallway or classroom.

He should have never taken the position of security guard.

I guess I've been watching too many crime TV shows......
I've always thought 'Call for back-up' was standard in these types of situations.
It might be more beneficial for school LE to be trained with expert swat team training.......they are more able to pin-point an exact target without injuring surrounding victims/children.
Also, school LE should have bullet-proof vests and helmets handy, maybe stored on their mobile golf type carts while patrolling school grounds.
That's just what I'm thinking right now.
I haven't had the time to re-think my opinion.
RIP, dear children and wishing all concerned safety and comfort.

I would agree. But that is an afterthought.
Put yourself or your husband or son in this man's situation. Would you run toward the sound of an AR15?

Agree. Accountability starts with the murderer, not the one who didn't prevent the murders. I wasn't there, don't know the situation, don't know what the expectations were of his role and so won't pass judgment, and will save my disdain for the miscreant that did the deed. I do think the case was, to some extent, frivolous and the potential that he, at 60, could have received a 90+ year sentence when the actual murderer received a life sentence boggles the mind. Perhaps the standards for 'school resource officers' need to be raised and protocols for their functioning clarified. I don't propose him as a poster child for heroism, to be sure, but his behavior was not criminal.

Yes, as someone here mentioned...There is a need for some type of metal/gun detectors at school entrances.
Same as at airports.
I've been thinking / saying this for years.
I do believe that it would cut down on these types of sh**tings, same as in airports.
I wouldn't mind higher property taxes if the money would go directly to this type of prevention.
Maybe a portion of state lotteries could be/should be used to fund these metal detectors.
Just thinking........I'll be back later.

@Lakelife62 Perhaps if he even attempted some type of diversion such as shooting out a window or anything else that might have taken the killer's eyes off the victims, maybe even one might have a chance to run away.
I sure as he** would be trying something, anything to help the children instead of cowering in a corner.
He knew what the job entailed and certainly realized there could be a chance something horrible might happen.

He was not a security guard. Scot Peterson began his career in 1985, as a deputy sherriff. He was a trained law enforcement officer, who was later assigned as a school resource officer at MSD High School. He retired In 2018, and will receive a pension for the rest of his life.
